Getting rights right: Implementing ‘Martha’s Rule’
The UK government has recently committed to adopting a new policy—dubbed ‘Martha’s Rule’—which has been characterised as providing patients the right to rapidly access a second clinical opinion in urgent or contested cases. Support for the rule emerged following the death of Martha Mills in 2021, after doctors failed to admit her to intensive care despite concerns raised by her parents. We argue that framing this issue in terms of patient rights …
Barriers to Studying Social Work in Australia for Unvaccinated People
Australian higher education providers (HEPs) gatekeep access to social work education using academic credentials, as well as criminal history checks. Some HEPs take an “as needed” approach to vaccination, while some add vaccination status as a gatekeeping criterion, and eligibility to study can be contingent upon all prospective students being fully vaccinated. We examined the websites of the 32 Australian HEPs that offered accredited social work…
Psychological Distress in Australian Onshore and Offshore Immigration Detention Centres from 2014–2018
This study examines the impact of length of detention and location of detention on psychological distress amongst Australian immigration detainees. This study employs a repeated measures cross-sectional study, utilising Australian government data from 2014 to 2018 that relied on the Kessler-10 (K10) to measure psychological distress. Methods for conducting trends analysis: Roadmap for comparing outcomes from three national HIV Population-based household surveys in Kenya (2007, 2012, and 2018)
Our approach can be used to support trend comparisons for variables in HIV surveys in low-income settings. Independent national household surveys can be assessed for comparability, adjusted as appropriate, and used to estimate trends in key indicators. Analyzing trends over time can not only provide insights into Kenya's progress toward HIV epidemic control but also identify gaps
How does Lived Experience of Incarceration Impact Upon the Helping Process in Social Work Practice: A Scoping Review
Whilst the value of lived experience in the helping process is recognised in a range of settings including mental health, disability and substance addiction, the understanding of therole of lived experience of incarceration in the helping process is less developed. This is relevant to the question of gatekeeping into the social work profession. A heightened focus on risk has resulted in limited opportunity for those with a history of incarceratio…

Analysis of Employment Advertisements Requiring Working With Children Checks in Queensland, Australia
Working with Children checks in Australia are regulated by legislation and designed to be used as pre-employment criminal history screening for child-related roles and organisations. Most Australian universities require prospective social work students to hold Working with Children clearance as a precondition to enrolment. Little is known about the reasoning for such application, and this Queensland study aims to contribute to resolving this ques…
Recognizing the hidden: Strengthening the HIV surveillance system among key and priority populations in Mozambique
High quality, representative data from HIV surveillance systems that have country ownership and commitment are critical for guiding national HIV responses, especially among key and priority populations given their disproportionate role in the transmission of the virus. Between 2011 to 2013, the Mozambique Ministry of Health has conducted five Biobehavioral Surveillance Surveys among key populations (female sex workers, men who has sex with men an…
Child-related Criminal History Screening and Social Work Education in Australia
Increasingly human service organisations in Australia require staff, volunteers, and social work students on placement to undergo child-related criminal history checks. In turn, many schools of social work require prospective or enrolled students to undergo criminal history checks and provide a clearance of their suitability to work with children. Universities have historically played a role of gatekeeper to the social work profession, but the ap…

Men Who Have Sex with Men in Mozambique: Identifying a Hidden Population at High-risk for HIV
The population of men who have sex with men (MSM) has been largely ignored in HIV-related policies and programming in Mozambique and there is little information about the contribution of MSM to the HIV epidemic. An integrated biological and behavioral study among MSM using respondent-driven sampling was conducted in 2011 in Maputo, Beira and Nampula/Nacala. Men who reported engaging in oral or anal sex with other men in the last 12 months answere…

The Sociology of Time: Histories and Historians in the Cultures of the West and of China
The author points out that in Western culture a linear conception of time and of causality is taken for granted. This view may have to be reassessed in the future, in certain areas of physics, at least. The traditional Chinese conception of time was that events occurred in time in a cyclical manner, perhaps because of the strong agricultural aspect of the society. The author discusses how these conceptions of time arose, how they influence the in…
