John Walker
This article reexamines the traditional view that John Walker founded the “mechanical” school of elocution. It points out that there were already strong formalistic influences in the elocutionary movement prior to the time of Walker. It also establishes Walker's role as that of a synthesizer rather than an originator of elocutionary theory.
