  • Do mandibular cross-sectional properties and dental microwear give similar dietary signals

    Open Access•Jason M Organ, C B Ruff et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2006•Cited by: 2•References: 45

Previous animal experimental work evaluating the effects of dietary consistency on mastication was generally limited to studies of either mandibular structure or rates and types of tooth wear. Control groups fed hard diets (HD) consistently exhibited increased cortical remodeling and/or bone strength when compared to groups fed soft diets (SD). Results of tooth-wear studies showed faster rates of tooth wear in HD animals. This study evaluates the…

  • Contours of the hominoid lateral tibial condyle with implications for Australopithecus☆

  • Dietary Inferences from Dental Occlusal Microwear at Mission San Luis de Apalachee

San Luis de Apalachee, one of a chain of Roman Catholic missions established in Spanish Florida (modern states of Georgia and Florida) in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, was the principal center of missionization of native populations in the Florida panhandle. Paleoethnobotanical remains yield evidence of production of various kinds of crops at the site, typical of nearly all mission period sites in the area. Stable isotope (carbon and n…
