  • Non-inclusive language in human subjects questionnaires

Open Access•Isabella Hernandez, Velia Nuñez et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

Adverse health outcomes disproportionately affect marginalized populations. Utilizing culturally and socially conscious research materials that are inclusive of various identities and experiences is necessary to help remediate these disparities. Our review finds compelling evidence of bias in many widely used data collection instruments. Recommendations for conducting more inclusive science are discussed

  • Role of Nonbehavioral Factors in Adjusting Long Bone Diaphyseal Structure in Free-ranging Pan troglodytes

    Open Access•Kristian J Carlson, Dale R Sumner et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2008•Cited by: 12•References: 68

Limb bones deform during locomotion and can resist the deformations by adjusting their shapes. For example, a tubular-shaped diaphysis best resists variably-oriented deformations. As behavioral profiles change during adulthood, patterns of bone deformation may exhibit age trends. Habitat characteristics, e.g., annual rainfall, tree density, and elevation changes, may influence bone deformations by eliciting individual components of behavioral rep…

  • Poliomyelitis and skeletal asymmetry in Gombe chimpanzees

  • Apparent age‐related bone loss among adult female Gombe chimpanzees

Open Access•Dale R Sumner, Mary Ellen Morbeck et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1989•Cited by: 10•References: 52

Apparent age‐related bone loss among adult females was observed in a skeletal sample derived from the free‐ranging Gombe chimpanzee population of Tanzania. Photon absorptiometric and computed tomographic bone scans indicated that, as in humans, bone was lost from the endosteal surface, but, in contrast to humans, more bone was lost from cortical sites than from cancellous sites. The etiology of this bone loss may be related to a number of factors…

  • Computed tomography and automated image analysis of prehistoric femora

    Open Access•Dale R Sumner, Brent Mockbee et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1985•Cited by: 15•References: 17

Non‐invasive characterization of limb bone cross‐sectional geometry would be useful for biomechanical analyses of skeletal collections. Computed tomography (CT) is potentially the method of choice. Additionally, CT images are suitable for automated analysis. CT is here shown to be both accurate and precise in the analysis of cross‐sectional geometry of prehistoric femora. Beam hardening artifacts can be reduced by using a water bath. As the avail…

  • Postembryonic dimensional allometry of the human femur

    Open Access•Dale R Sumner•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1984•Cited by: 2•References: 24

Developmental constraints can affect evolution. McMahon's (1973, 1975a) hypothesis of elastic similarity is tested as an epigenetic rule. This is an ontogenetic hypothesis that previously has not been tested with ontogenetic data. Cross‐sectional data from the human femur are analyzed. Length‐diameter relationships for phases of growth and aging are calculated with bivariate allometry. McMahon's hypothesis cannot be rejected, although most of the…
