The Number of Louse Eggs on Wild Japanese Macaques (Macaca fuscata) Varies with Age, but Not with Sex or Season
During grooming, primates remove harmful ectoparasites, such as ticks and lice, and there is direct evidence for a health benefit of tick removal. Grooming behaviors differ among primates with respect to age and sex. Moreover, the number of ectoparasite may exhibit seasonal variation. Therefore the number of ectoparasites on a host may vary with effects, host age and sex, and season. However, these effects have not been a focus of louse infestati…
Non-offspring nursing by a nulliparous pregnant female just before first parturition in free-ranging Japanese macaques
Parity‐related differences in suckling behavior and nipple preference among free‐ranging Japanese macaques
Suckling behavior of primiparae in free-ranging Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata) was compared with that of multiparae at Jigokudani Monkey Park, the Shiga Heights, Nagano Prefecture, Japan, from April 1984 to June 1994. The estimated rates of milk secretion in a single preferred nipple among primiparae were lower than those among multiparae from birth to 5 months of age. Milk secretion capabilities of primiparous mothers, hence, appear to be in…

Matrilineal distribution of louse egg‐handling techniques during grooming in free‐ranging Japanese macaques
Grooming behavior of which the primary function appears to be the removal of lice on others (Tanaka and Takefushi [1993] Anthropological Science 101: 187–193) was studied in Japanese macaques at Jigokudani Monkey Park, Japan, June 1990–July 1993. Several louse egg‐handling techniques used during grooming were identified (with differences in efficiency) in a freeranging group. In the low‐ranking maternal lineages, the distribution of these techniq…
Milk secretion in pregnancy among free‐ranging Japanese macaques
Milking under anesthesia in pregnant free‐ranging Japanese macaques ( Macaca fuscata ) directly revealed lactation in gestation at Jigokudani Monkey Park, the Shiga Heights, Nagano Prefecture, Japan, from 12 to 14 February 1992. Multiparae secreted milk at 76–97 days of estimated fertilization age when the birth intervals to the next offspring were 2 years. The observation of sucking behavior from February 1991 to March 1992 indicated that concur…
Elimination of External Parasites(Lice) Is the Primary Function of Grooming in Free-ranging Japanese Macaques
Grooming behavior was studied from September 1990 to May 1992 in the provisioned troop of free-ranging Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata) at Jigokudani Monkey Park, Japan. By confiscating what macaques picked up during grooming, we found that macaques pick up lice (Pedicinus obtusus and Pedicinus eurygaster) and the eggs of lice and eat them. Slow motion video replays were used to discriminate the prey of grooming. Most (98.9%) of what Japanese m…
Variability in the development of mother-infant relationships among free-ranging Japanese macaques
Change of nipple preference between successive offspring in Japanese macaques
Selective use of nipples among free‐ranging infant Japanese macaques ( Macaca fuscata ) was studied. Each infant held only one of its mother's two nipples in the mouth during an average of 90.9% ± 1.5% (SEM) of total nipple contact time. The next offspring born to the same mother tended to use the nipple that its previous sibling had not used. Maternal behavior did not cause use of one nipple or the other
