  • Phylogenetic implications of comparative primate growth rates

    Open Access•Donald McKim, Thomas C Hutchinson•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1975•References: 7

Growth data from a number of species of Old and New World primates have been analyzed by calculating instantaneous relative growth rates. Species discussed are the New World species Saimiri sciureus and Saguinus nigricollis , and the Old World species Pan troglodytes and Macaca mulatta. The analysis of the perinatal growth data indicated that differences in relative growth rates are present during early periods of growth. More specifically, it wa…

  • The problem of age estimation: A study using rhesus monkeys ( Macaca mulatta )

    Open Access•James A Gavan, Thomas C Hutchinson•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1973•Cited by: 9•References: 9

Accurate estimation of chronological age for animals of unknown birth date is important in a variety of circumstances. This is particularly true for non‐human primates and especially true for rhesus monkeys. Data, useful for this purpose, have been organized in a variety of ways. The purpose of this paper is to duplicate some of these methods and to check their accuracy. In general, three methods of organizing data were used. The parameters for e…

  • Prenatal growth of long bones in rhesus and squirrel monkeys ( Macaca mulatta and Saimiri sciureus )

    Open Access•Donald McKim, Thomas C Hutchinson et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1972•Cited by: 2•References: 5

Fetal long bone growth was studied from 59 radiographs representing 35 macaques and 79 radiographs representing 16 squirrel monkeys. From lateral abdominal radiographs of pregnant females total lengths of long bone shadows were measured to the nearest millimeter with a sliding caliper. A linear regression line was fitted to the data for each species. The high correlation coefficients (min. = 0.92) indicated not only that over 80% of the variance …
