  • Blood groups as genetic markers in chimpanzees: Their importance for the national chimpanzee breeding program

    Open Access•W W Socha•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•1981

Severe restrictions on the importation of chimpanzees emphasize the importance and urgency of domestic breeding as a sole means to assure an uninterrupted supply of animals for medical research. An insight into the genetic structure of the self‐sustained captive population of animals is indispensable to prevent the effects of inbreeding and to preserve the animals' reproductive capacity. This can be achieved by study of sets of genetic markers in…

  • Blood groups of pig‐tailed macaques ( Macaca nemestrina )

    Open Access•W W Socha, J Moor‐Jankowski et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1978•Cited by: 2•References: 12

The human‐type A‐B‐O blood groups of 57 pig‐tailed macaques ( Macaca nemestrina ) were determined and the calculated gene frequencies, O = 0.8908, A = 0.0825 and B = 0.0267, gave excellent fit with the hypothesis of inheritance by triple allelic genes. In tests for simian‐type blood groups with rhesus, baboon and crab‐eating macaque immune antisera, it was shown that the red cells of pig‐tailed macaques are polymorphic for several simian‐type spe…

  • Blood groups of baboons. Population genetics of feral animals

    Open Access•W W Socha, A S Wiener et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1977•Cited by: 2•References: 8

Blood and saliva from 495 Ethiopan baboons were collected in the field and tested for their human‐type A‐B‐O groups while 493 blood samples were tested for their simian‐type blood factors A p , B p , C p , G p , N p , ca and hu. Four series of feral animals were tested: 194 olive baboons, a troop of 82 and another of 90 hamadryas baboons, and a series of 129 baboons classified as olive/hamadryas hybrids. In addition, 126 baboons from other source…

  • Blood groups of bonnet macaques ( Macaca radiata ), with a brief introduction to seroprimatology

    Open Access•W W Socha, J Moor‐Jankowski et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1976•Cited by: 2•References: 17

The human‐type A‐B‐O blood groups of 52 bonnet macaques ( Macaca radiata ) were determined. Application of method of population genetics indicated the gene frequences to be O = 0.173, A = 0.480 and B = 0.347. Cross testing of sera and red cells of the bonnet macaques revealed two blood‐type‐specific isoagglutinins, one of them strong enough for use as a blood typing reagent. No blood group polymorphism was revealed by testing bonnet macaque red c…

  • Population genetics of chimpanzee blood groups

    Open Access•A S Wiener, Eve B Gordon et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1972•References: 7

A series of 60 chimpanzees ( Pan troglodytes ) were tested for their human‐type A‐B‐O blood groups and for ten simian‐type blood factors. Of the 60 chimpanzees four were group O and 56 group A; combining this with our previous results, among 274 chimpanzees there were 36 group O and 238 group A. Gene frequency analysis of the V‐A‐B types (determined by three antisera, anti‐ V c , anti‐ A c and anti‐ B c ) of the 60 chimpanzees indicated inheritan…

  • The A P ‐B P blood groups of baboons

    Open Access•A S Wiener, W W Socha et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1970•Cited by: 2•References: 5

Four isoimmunized baboons each produced isoantibodies defining a number of blood factors of baboon blood of which two, A p and B p , have been most intensively studied. The two blood factors determine the A P ‐B P blood group system which, judging from its serological behavior, may be the baboon analogue of the human M‐N system and the chimpanzee V‐A‐B system. Tests for A P ‐B P types of 592 baboons showed striking differences in the distribution…
