  • Earth Rights for the Advancement of a Planetary Health Agenda

    Open Access•Catalina Correa-Salazar, Isabela Marín-Carvajal et al.•ARTICLE•Health Education & Behavior•2024

This article discusses Earth’s Rights as an environmental justice mechanism of reparation, protection, and justice for indigenous communities, environmental defenders, and other populations in Latin America. We argue that Earth’s rights encompass and include the right to health and can be integrated into international human rights frameworks to protect all forms of life, responding to colonial legacies of discrimination and violence. We respond t…

  • Prevalence and incidence of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and its risk factors in Korea: A nationwide population-based study

Open Access•Hyungtae Kim, Siin Kim et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2019

This national population-based study confirmed the high prevalence and incidence of ASCVD and its risk factors in the adult population of South Korea. We suggest that more intensive treatment and prevention are needed to prevent ASCVD

  • Use of cognitive question testing methodologies in participant action research: Implementing the three-step test-interview method in Indian county

    Thomas W Pavkov, Jacob B Priest et al.•ARTICLE•Cultural Diversity & Ethnic…•2012•References: 3

This study describes the use of cognitive question testing methods to pretest a Web-based questionnaire designed to gather information from American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) youth between the ages of 18 and 25. The questionnaire included items related to risk and resiliency factors as well as potentially sensitive topics of victimization and delinquency. Question testing was completed with a sample of 15 youth living in three different re…

  • Race/Ethnicity and gender differences in health intentions and behaviors regarding exercise and diet for adults with type 2 diabetes: A cross-sectional analysis

    Open Access•James R Gavin, Kathleen M Fox et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2011

Differences in health intentions and healthy behaviors were noted across race-gender groups. More Non-Hispanic African-American men reported an intention to follow advice on exercising and self-report of exercising regularly was also higher compared with other race-gender groups. More Hispanic men reported high physical activity levels than other groups. Despite an increased willingness to follow healthcare recommendations for diet, >50% of respo…

  • Prevalence of self-reported diagnosis of diabetes mellitus and associated risk factors in a national survey in the US population: SHIELD (Study to Help Improve Early evaluation and management of risk …

Open Access•Harold Bays, Harold E Bays et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2007

The SHIELD design allowed for a very large, community-based sample with broad demographic representation of the population of interest. When comparing results from the SHIELD screening survey (self-report only) to those from NHANES 1999-2002 (self-report, clinical and laboratory evaluations), the prevalence of diabetes was similar. SHIELD allows the identification of respondents with and without a current diagnosis of the illness of interest, and…

  • Short-term persistent depression following hip fracture: A risk factor and target to increase resilience in elderly people

    Sheryl Zimmerman, S I Zimmerman et al.•ARTICLE•Social Work Research•1999

Persistent depression is a risk factor for poor recovery following hip fracture. The purpose of this study was to clarify the relationship between depression and functional recovery at one year and to investigate which characteristics discriminate people who are at greatest risk of poor outcomes. A total of 272 people ages 65 and older were evaluated in the hospital after hip fracture and followed with standardized measures of affect and physical…

  • Excess mortality attributable to hip fracture in white women aged 70 years and older

Jay Magaziner, Eva Lydick et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1997•Cited by: 2•References: 32

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to estimate the excess mortality attributable to hip fracture. METHODS: The 6-year survival rate of community-dwelling White female hip fracture patients aged 70 years and older entering one of seven hospitals from 1984 to 1986 (n = 578) was compared with that of White female respondents aged 70 years and older interviewed in 1984 for the Longitudinal Study on Aging (n = 3773). RESULTS: After age, educatio…

  • Bone mass in Guamanian patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and parkinsonism‐dementia

    Open Access•Ralph M Garruto, Chris C Plato et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1989•Cited by: 3•References: 9

Bone mass, as assessed by measurements of total subperiosteal diameter and medullary width of the second metacarpal bone on hand‐wrist radiographs, was evaluated for 31 Guamanian patients (15 males, 16 females) with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), 67 patients (39 males, 28 females) with parkinsonism‐dementia (PD), and 66 (34 males, 32 females) nonaffected Guamanian controls. Comparisons between the two disease groups and between each disease…

  • Toe and plantar dermatoglyphics in adult American Caucasians

    Open Access•Kathleen M Fox, Chris C Plato•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1987•References: 17

The scarcity of information on control data of toe and plantar dermatoglyphics led us to undertake this study of adult American Caucasians. Toe and sole prints of 168 male and 83 female participants of the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging were analyzed. Toe pattern frequencies demonstrate that fibular loops are the most prevalent pattern on the toes in both males and females. Pattern distribution by digit shows that arches are most often loc…
