Demographic Study of Gujjars of Delhi II. Reproductive Profile and Mortality Levels
Fertility is a major counteracting force to population attrition from mortality and therefore, has a significant impact as an expansionary force in population dynamics. While mortality, on the other hand, checks the unlimited growth of population and regulates the distribution of individuals in different age groups. It is well known that increasing birth rates cause exposure to several social problems like crisis of minimum needs for survival and…

Effect of Mountaineering Training on Selected Body Measurements and Physical Fitness in Children
Among the sojourners, there is a general decline in work efficiency at high altitude. Muscular activity is limited by the rate at which the muscles are supplied with oxygenated blood in there rarefied atmosphere. During exercise, oxygen consumption is greater both at sea level and at high altitude. Low oxygen pressure coupled with physical exercise has a tremendous pressure on human beings. Mountaineering training imparts not only the skills for …

Data were collected on 133 high-altitude and 141 low-altitude Bod girls in the age range 12-18 years. Lung functions were, age to age, higher in high-altitude girls than their coeval lowlanders. This has been explained as an adaptation to the stress of low atmospheric pressure at high alti…

Questions in the Sacred-Cow Controversy [and Comments and Reply]
Contrary to Marvin Harris's hypothesis, desiccation and population increase in India following 1000 B.C. are highly unlikely to have been the origin of the Hindu ban on cow slaughter and beef eating. In many places in present-day India,"wild" and stray cattle are serious problem to farmers. The sacred-cow concept contributes to a significant waste of beef and inefficiency in cattle breeding. Homes for old cows are basically religious institutions…
Growth trends among male bods of Ladakh — a high altitude population
A random sample of 274 native male Bods of Ladakh ranging in age from 11 to 19 years, living in Leh (Ladakh) at mean altitude of 3,514 metres, was studied. The pattern of growth of this sample was compared with the sea level Indians. The results indicate that: The so called adolescent spurt is not well defined among Bod highlanders. Bods grow faster than plain dwelling Indians and are taller and heavier at the age of 19 years. The highlanders exh…
Sacred Cows and Water Buffalo in India: The Uses of Ethnography [and Comments and Reply]
In 1958-59 and in 1977-78, we undertook holistic ethnographic studies of a village in northern India. Profound technoenvironmental change occurred in the 18-year period between the two studies. With regard to cattle, the principal change was a shift from bullock power to machinery. This provided the basis for a test of the two principal positions that have been taken in the sacred-cow controversy: (1) technoenvironmental determinism, which denies…

Ventilatory capacity among highland Bods: A possible adaptive mechanism at high altitude
Ventilatory capacity (forced vital capacity, forced expiratory volume and maximal voluntary ventilation) among Highland Bods (3514 m altitude) was higher than in an ethnically similar population residing at a lower altitude in Kulu Valley (1500--2200 m). Increased ventilatory capacity appears to have developed among native highlanders as a consequence of a biological response to high altitude. Numerous factors such as low oxygen pressure, increas…
