Maturation disparity between hand‐wrist bones in Hong Kong Chinese children
The hand‐wrist radiographs of 571 Chinese boys and girls from Hong Kong, 2 months to 17 years old, were assessed center‐by‐center according to the Greulich‐Pyle Atlas. For each child the mean skeletal ages (SA) of six bone groups with each group consisting of bones from the same rows, were recorded. The overall SA was also obtained as the arithmetic mean of all centers. Maturation disparity between the various bone groups was demonstrated with th…
Natural markers in bone growth
Three features in the long bones, shown by radiograms, have been used as markers for the study of bone growth. Transverse lines of arrested growth. Radiograms of six long limb bones from 1,576 individuals were investigated for clearness and persistence of these lines. Both ends of tibia and fibula showed very high frequency of suitable lines for markers, possibly also the distal end of femur and radius. Notches in the base of second and fifth met…
The amount and distribution of subcutaneous tissue in Southern Chinese children from Hong Kong
Skinfold thicknesses were measured with a Harpenden caliper on four body regions (triceps, calf, subscapular, and supra‐iliac) of 3,975 boys and 3,903 girls of Southern Chinese origin, from 6 to 18 years of age, in Hong Kong. The subjects were classified into high, middle, and low socio‐economic groups. Norms of skinfold thicknesses of the four body regions were obtained for each age level. On all dimensions, the girls are significantly larger th…
