The ethnological significance of the gamma‐globulin (Gm) factors in Melanesia
A study was made of the distribution of the immunoglobulin markers Gm(a), (x), (z), (f), (g), (b 0 ), (b 1 ), (b 3 ), (s), (t), (c 3 ), (c 5 ) and Inv (1) and Inv (a) in 906 individuals sampled from several population groups living in various parts of New Guinea and New Britain. A study of 123 families confirmed the presence of the following gene complexes: Gm za;g , Gm zax;g , Gm za;b and Gm fa;b . Gm(s), (t), (c 3 ) and (c 5 ) were absent and e…
The distribution of haptoglobin and transferrin types in northeast New Guinea
This paper reports haptoglobin testing of 2,029 serum specimens and transferrin typing of 1,911 specimens obtained from villages representing a wide range of environments and cultures in the Markham River Valley region of northeast New Guinea. The haptoglobin gene frequencies ranged from 90.0% to 61.4% for Hp 1 and the frequency of the transferring gene Tf c ranged from 94.9% to 71.5%. Other transferrin genes present were Tf D1 and, in low freque…
Distribution of β‐thalassemia trait and erythrocyte glucose‐6‐phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency in the Markham river valley of New Guinea
Ten villages in or near the Markham Valley, northeastern New Guinea, have provided a sample of 476 males for the ascertainment of glucose‐6‐phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency and 810 individuals of both sexes for the investigation of the β‐thalassemia trait. An extreme heterogeneity was found in the prevalence of both traits when the villages were analyzed separately (from 1.5% to 18.2% demonstrating G6PD deficiency and from 0 to 22.8% evi…
Distribution of the group specific (Gc) serum component in the populations of the Markham Valley, New Guinea
The distribution of the Gc phenotypes was determined by immunoelectrophoresis amongst 486 inhabitants of nine villages of the Markham River Valley of New Guinea. The overall gene frequencies were Gc 1 , 0.538; Gc 2 , 0.351; Gc Aborigine , 0.112. Gc Aborigine occurred in all the villages, its frequency ranging from 0.041 to 0.187. The Gc 2 gene frequency also varied widely ranging from 0.167 to 0.491. No correlation could be found between altitude…
