  • Mitochondrial DNA analysis of Tunisians reveals a mosaic genetic structure with recent population expansion

    Open Access•Sabeh Frigi, Luisa Mota‐vieira et al.•ARTICLE•HOMO•2017

  • Antiquity and diversity of aboriginal Australian Y ‐chromosomes

    Open Access•Nano Nagle, Kaye N Ballantyne et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2016•Cited by: 1•References: 79

OBJECTIVE: Understanding the origins of Aboriginal Australians is crucial in reconstructing the evolution and spread of Homo sapiens as evidence suggests they represent the descendants of the earliest group to leave Africa. This study analyzed a large sample of Y-chromosomes to answer questions relating to the migration routes of their ancestors, the age of Y-haplogroups, date of colonization, as well as the extent of male-specific variation. MET…

  • Genetic Admixture

Open Access•Oscar Lao, Mannis van Oven•CHAPTER•International Encyclopedia of the…•2015

  • Genetic genealogy comes of age

    Open Access•Maarten H D Larmuseau, Anneleen Van Geystelen et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2013•Cited by: 4•References: 46

In this article, we promote the implementation of extensive genealogical data in population genetic studies. Genealogical records can provide valuable information on the origin of DNA donors in a population genetic study, going beyond the commonly collected data such as residence, birthplace, language, and self‐reported ethnicity. Recent studies demonstrated that extended genealogical data added to surname analysis can be crucial to detect signal…

  • Indian ocean crossroads

    Open Access•Jeroen Pijpe, A De Voogt et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2013•References: 45

The Maldives are an 850 km‐long string of atolls located centrally in the northern Indian Ocean basin. Because of this geographic situation, the present‐day Maldivian population has potential for uncovering genetic signatures of historic migration events in the region. We therefore studied autosomal DNA‐, mitochondrial DNA‐, and Y‐chromosomal DNA markers in a representative sample of 141 unrelated Maldivians, with 119 from six major settlements. …

  • A “Copernican” Reassessment of the Human Mitochondrial DNA Tree from its Root

Open Access•Doron M Behar, Mannis van Oven et al.•ARTICLE•The American Journal of Human…•2012

  • Updated comprehensive phylogenetic tree of global human mitochondrial DNA variation

    Open Access•Mannis van Oven, Manfred Kayser•ARTICLE•Human Mutation•2009

Human mitochondrial DNA is widely used as tool in many fields including evolutionary anthropology and population history, medical genetics, genetic genealogy, and forensic science. Many applications require detailed knowledge about the phylogenetic relationship of mtDNA variants. Although the phylogenetic resolution of global human mtDNA diversity has greatly improved as a result of increasing sequencing efforts of complete mtDNA genomes, an upda…
