  • Reproduction in captive lion tamarins (Leontopithecus)

Open Access•Jeffrey A French, Alcides Pissinatti et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•1996

Diversity in reproductive and social systems characterizes the primate family Callitrichidae. This paper contributes to our appreciation of this diversity by presenting the first detailed comparative analysis of captive breeding in three species of lion tamarins (Leontopithecus chrysomelas, L. chrysopygus, and L. rosalia) housed at the Centro de Primatologia do Rio de Janeiro. The annual pattern of reproduction in all three species of Leontopithe…

  • Long‐call structure and its relation to taxonomy in lion tamarins

Open Access•Charles T Snowdon, Alexandra Hodun et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•1986

Recent evidence on craniodental morphology suggests the acceptance of three species of lion tamarins ( Leontopithecus ). Confirmatory evidence is presented here using the morphology of long‐call vocalizations recorded from several individuals of each type of lion tamarin. Recordings were made of Leontopicthecus rosalia, Leontopithecus chrysopygus , and Leontopithecus chrysomelas at the Centro de Primatologia do Rio de Janeiro (FEEMA) and of L. ro…

  • Intraspecific chromosome variation in Cebus apella (cebidae, platyrrhini)

    Open Access•Héctor N Seuénez, Jorge L Armada et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•1986

Chromosome studies in six wild‐caught specimens of Cebus apella xanthosternos showed a distinctive chromosome pair number 11 that made it possible to distinguish this subspecies from other Cebus apella . The characteristic chromosome pair had intercalar heterochromatin unlike the “standard” chromosome type of Cebus apella and other species of the same genus, in which this chromosome pair shows a large, terminal, heterochromatic block. A compariso…

  • Genetic variation within and among lion tamarins

    Open Access•Lisa Forman, Devra G Kleiman et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1986•Cited by: 9•References: 38

The golden lion tamarin Leontopithecus rosalia rosalia , one of the rarest and most endangered of New World primates, has been the focus of an intensive research and conservation effort for two decades. During that period, managed breeding from 44 founders has brought the captive population to over 400 individuals, a number that equals or exceeds the estimated number of free‐ranging golden lion tamarins. The extent of genetic variation among gold…
