Semantic Segmentation of CT Data of Oak Wood for the Creation of Wood Anatomical Climate Proxy Archives
In this study, an automated method was developed for the semantic segmentation of computed tomography ( CT ) data of oak wood linking the fields of wood anatomy and image analysis. The method reliably and rapidly segments whole vessels regardless of the presence of tylosis, which frequently is a major problem in wood anatomical studies. Analysis of the segmented vessels can contribute to the expansion of wood anatomical climate proxy archives. A …
The Oxford Handbook of Mountain Archaeology
This handbook is currently in development, with individual articles publishing online in advance of print publication. At this time, we cannot add information about unpublished articles in this handbook, however the table of contents will continue to grow as additional articles pass through the review process and are added to the site. Please note that the online publication date for this handbook is the date that the first article in the title w…
The Northern Black Sea and North Caucasus
This chapter surveys the Iron Age in the region extending from the western Black Sea to the North Caucasus. As in many parts of Europe, this was the first period in which written sources named peoples, places, and historical events. The Black Sea saw Greek colonization from the seventh century BC and its northern shore later became the homeland of the important Bosporan kingdom. For a long time, researchers sought to identify tribes named by auth…
The Oxford Handbook of the European Iron Age
The Oxford Handbook of the European Iron Age presents to students, scholars, and interested general readers a broad overview of current understanding of the archaeology of Europe from 1000 bc to the early historic period. During this period, new technologies, agricultural innovation, and demographic growth saw much of the landscape opened up to near modern limits, accompanied in many areas by greater social and economic complexity. Three introduc…
New cases of trepanations from the 5th to 3rd millennia BC in Southern Russia in the context of previous research
OBJECTIVES: It is a big challenge to diagnose the motives behind trepanations in prehistoric crania. Surgical-therapeutic attempts may be apparent by the presence of fractures, however, ritual or nonmedical motives are rarely supported by visible evidence in the bones. This article presents data on the trepanations of several individuals from South Russia dating to the Eneolitic and Bronze Age that may indicate a ritual procedure. In these crania…
