  • The dichotomous pattern of craniofacial expansion during aging

    Open Access•Harry Israel•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1977•Cited by: 12•References: 6

The craniofacial skeleton expands during adult life and previous investigations have demonstrated non‐uniformity in continuing growth. This report confirms the fact that sella turcica, frontal sinus and the skull tables remodel at a rate per unit time which is twice the amount of the anterior‐posterior skull diameter. The dual enlargement pattern occurs in both males and females and has been observed longitudinally from the third through the eigh…

  • Age factor and the pattern of change in craniofacial structures

    Open Access•Harry Israel•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1973•Cited by: 27•References: 22

Today special emphasis is being placed upon the understanding of human aging and this study is an attempt to shed light on the craniofacial complex during the later years. Postcranial skeletal alteration is clear and it is now evident that cranial and facial structures are no exception to the aging process. The longitudinal information presented here indicates continuing overall growth from early adulthood to later life. The cranium thickens and …

  • Microdensitometric analysis for study of skeletal growth and aging in the living subject

    Open Access•Harry Israel•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1968•References: 6

Microdensitometric analysis of a radiographic image of mineralized tissue offers information on the morphologic characteristics of the specimen examined. The use of microstructure (such as individual trabecula of bone) and macrostructure (such as Harris lines of arrest) as in vivo bone markers allows for assessment of gross skeletal changes in nondestructive fashion. This technique is also applicable to the study of the interrelationship of tooth…

  • Brachymesophalangia of digit five in ten populations

    Open Access•Stanley M Garn, Susan L Fels et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1967•Cited by: 8•References: 4

Brachymesophalangia, involving both reduction in length and increase in breadth of a middle segment was studied in the fifth digital ray in over 10,000 radiographs from ten countries. Population frequencies increase systematically from samples of European origin through to South American Indians and Asiatics. Lack of relationship between delayed appearance of ossification centers and brachymesophalangia of digit five in areas of protein‐calorie m…
