  • Assessment and valuation of government policies to improve food animal welfare

Open Access•Richard Bennett, Kelvin Balcombe et al.•ARTICLE•Food Policy•2026

There is a need to assess the benefits of government policy to improve the welfare of food animals. We present a holistic, animal-centred welfare assessment method using an expert panel of independent animal welfare scientists linked to a survey of food shoppers’ willingness to pay (WTP) to improve welfare levels, using a 0–100 animal welfare scale. We apply this method to six food animal types in the UK and 15 different topical policy scenarios.…

  • Validating game-based learning assessment of students’ computational thinking practices using Bayesian networks and machine-learning based detectors

Open Access•Elizabeth Rowe, Russell G Almond et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Research on Technology…•2026

Zoombinis is an award-winning digital game aligned with four computational thinking practices—problem decomposition, pattern recognition, abstraction, and algorithm design. The study manipulates two levels of scoring: Evidence identification (EI)—identifying outcomes from a single puzzle-level,—and evidence accumulation (EA)—summarizing observed outcomes across puzzles and levels. For three puzzles, machine learning detectors provide information …

  • Silver, Butter, Cloth

Open Access•Elizabeth Rowe, Elizabeth Ashman Rowe•ARTICLE•The English Historical Review•2021

This is the third volume proceeding from a series of symposia investigating the economy of the Viking Age. It contains an introductory overview by Jane Kershaw (pp. 1–14) and fourteen essays grouped into four themes: the monetary and quasi-monetary functions of silver, the non-monetary functions of precious metal, sources of silver, and non-silver currencies. The fragmentation of silver (i.e. hack-silver) is a particular focus of the essays of th…

  • CYP17 genotype modifies the impact of anthropometric variation on salivary estradiol in healthy women

    Open Access•Elizabeth Rowe, Elizabeth J Rowe et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2015•References: 39

Several studies demonstrate that human ovarian function is responsive to the energetic environment, which has led to the development of theoretical models that explain this phenomenon. Although many genes are involved in ovarian hormone production, the possibility that genetic polymorphism may affect ovarian response to energetic conditions has not been considered. Cytochrome P450c17α is an enzyme that produces androgen precursors used to make es…

  • Genuine’ refugees or illegitimate ‘boat people‘

    Open Access•Elizabeth Rowe, Erin O’brien et al.•ARTICLE•Australian Journal of Social Issues•2014•Cited by: 9•References: 26

Immigration to Australia has long been the focus of negative political interest. In recent times, the proposal of exclusionary policies such as the Malaysia Deal in 2011 has fuelled further debate. In these debates, Federal politicians often describe asylum seekers and refugees as ‘illegal’, ‘queue jumpers’, and ‘boat people’. This article examines the political construction of asylum seekers and refugees during debates surrounding the Malaysia D…

  • From research, through policy and politics to practice

    Open Access•Emma L Davies, Emma Davies et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2014•References: 9

Purpose – The aim of this paper is on what the authors learnt from negotiating the difficult terrain linking, or separating, research from policy advice and the political process. Design/methodology/approach – This paper outlines two case studies from New Zealand to examine what confounds and what bridges gaps between research, policy, politics and practice. The case studies were predicated on the belief that interagency and cross-sectoral action…

  • Organised crime and public sector corruption

Elizabeth Rowe, Tabor Akman et al.•BOOK•2013

In 2006, the Australian Government introduced the Anti-money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing Act 2006 (Cth) which increased regulatory controls over businesses potentially able to facilitate organised criminal activities such as money laundering. The implementation of tougher legislation and associated law enforcement interventions may result in criminal organisations adjusting their tactics in order to continue their activities withou…
