Reconstructing formation processes at the Canary Islands indigenous site of Belmaco Cave (La Palma, Spain) through a multiproxy geoarchaeological approach
The indigenous populations of La Palma (Canary Islands), who arrived on the island from Northwest Africa ca. 2000 years B.P., were predominantly pastoralists. Dietary changes across time
Objectives This article presents new radiocarbon and isotopic data to provide further information about the diet of the indigenous population of La Gomera and its possible changes across time. Materials and methods δ 13 C and δ 15 N of 53 human and 19 faunal samples from different sites on the island have been obtained and analyzed. This paper addresses the meaning of animals in the sanctuary of Garajonay, in La Gomera. It is a main sacred place for the Prehispanic population, in which they systematically used to perform ritual celebrations within the time period between ss. vii-xii ad cal.
