  • Menopause in female rhesus monkeys

    Open Access•Margaret L Walker•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•1995

Fifteen female rhesus monkeys ( Macaca mulatto ), ranging in age from 8 to 34 years, were studied for one year to characterize the endocrine and menstrual changes associated with menopause in this species. Five monkeys were premenopausal; these younger monkeys, ages 8–11 years, menstruated and showed cyclic ovarian activity during the 12–month study period, as evidenced by menses and periodic elevations of serum estradiol (E 2 ) and luteinizing h…

  • Effects of anesthetic agents on the adrenocortical system of female baboons

    Open Access•Margaret L Walker, Gerald J Pepe et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•1987

Invasive surgical procedures are often used to study the reproductive and adrenocortical endocrine systems in primates. Anesthetic agents must, therefore, be used that have the least confounding effects on these systems. The present study was designed to characterize various adrenocortical endocrine responses of female baboons ( Papio anubis ), each treated for 120 minutes with an infusion of ketamine HCl (6 mg/min) in 5% dextrose in water (0.40 …

  • Social stimulation and the resumption of copulation in Rhesus (Macaca mulatto) and stumptail (Macaca arctoides) Macaques

    Open Access•Daniel Q Estep, Thomas P Gordon et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1986•Cited by: 1•References: 24

  • Effects of age, lactation, and repeated cycles on rhesus monkey copulatory intervals

Open Access•Mark E Wilson, Mark Wilson et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•1984

Young, sexually mature female rhesus monkeys copulate on more days prior to conception than do older females, and this prolonged discrete mating period is associated with an earlier rise in serum estradiol prior to the first ovulation of the breeding season. The influence of repeated ovulatory cycles and the presence of a suckling infant on the copulatory patterns were examined in two separate analyses. Extending previous work, young, nulliparous…

  • Estimation of body fat in female rhesus monkeys

    Open Access•Margaret L Walker, Susan M Schwartz et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1984•Cited by: 8•References: 14

Measurement of height (crown–rump length), body weight, and abdominal subcutaneous fat depth, based on skinfold thickness taken from 13 female rhesus monkeys comprising two age groups were correlated with body fat values derived from tritiated water determinations of total body water. The manner with which each measure was related to percent body fat differed as a function of age of the animal. In the young, nulliparous females, crown–rump length…

  • Consequences of first pregnancy in rhesus monkeys

    Open Access•Mark E Wilson, Salvatore Ritrovato et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1983•Cited by: 8•References: 21

Female primates have been thought to be reproductively dis‐advantaged during their early reproductive years. In order to assess the effects of first pregnancy on a female's subsequent reproductive activity, the breeding records of female rhesus monkeys ( Macaca mulatta ) living in provisioned, outdoor‐housed, social groups were examined with respect to age of sexual maturity. Of the 78 colony‐born females contributing to the analysis, 20.5% had t…

  • Prenatal ionizing irradiaton and early postnatal growth of Colombian and Bolivian squirrel monkeys ( Saimiri sciureus )

Open Access•Lary C Walker, Bernice Kaack et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•1981

Fetal squirrel monkeys of Bolivian and Colombian origin were exposed to 100 rad cobalt‐60 radiation in utero and carried to term by the dams. Body weight, head circumference, crown–rump length, and food intake were measured during the first 28 postnatal days. Significant subspecies differences were noted in both mothers and offspring, the Colombian squirrel monkeys being generally larger than the Bolivians. The irradiated offspring weighed signif…
