  • Distribution of Japanese macaques by questionnaire survey conducted by Hiroshi Takeshita in 1970

Open Access•Kunio Watanabe, Takeaki Honda et al.•ARTICLE•Primate Research•2024

Takeshita carried out a mail-questionnaire survey on the distribution and existing population of Japanese macaques, Macaca fuscata, in 1970. In the survey, the questionnaires were sent to more than one-third of all Japanese local governments (1102 cities, towns and villages in total) where wild monkeys were likely to be found and received replies from 85% of them. These results, however, have been stored for more than half-century without public …

  • Stomach and colonic microbiome of wild Japanese macaques

Open Access•Wanyi Lee, Takashi Hayakawa et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2021

Within the gastrointestinal tract, the physiochemical microenvironments are highly diversified among the different stages of food digestion. Accordingly, gut microbiome composition and function vary at different gut sites. In this study, we examine and compare the compositional and functional potential between the stomach and colonic microbiome of wild Japanese macaques ( Macaca fuscata yakui ) living in the evergreen forest of Yakushima Island. …

  • Island-wide Distribution of Japanese Macaques in Yakushima Revealed by Census Targeting Feces on Roads in 2017-2018

    Open Access•Goro Hanya, Shin-ichi YOSHIHIRO et al.•ARTICLE•Primate Research•2020

We studied the island-wide distribution of wild Japanese macaques in Yakushima (Macaca fuscata yakui) in May 2017 and 2018. We walked 165.4 km along roads and recorded the location of 842 macaque feces. We divided the roads into segments 50 m in length (N=3308) and analyzed the effect of the areas of farms and villages or conifer plantations around the segments and also the presence of hunting for pest control on the presence or absence of feces.…

  • Variation in chewing efficiency of Yakushima Japanese macaque ( Macaca fuscata yakui )

Open Access•Tianmeng He, Takeaki Honda et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 52

OBJECTIVES: Chewing efficiency plays an important role in the survival and distribution of primates. Yet, little is known about the intra-specific variation of chewing efficiency. The purpose of this study is to report the pattern of seasonal and regional variation in chewing efficiency among Yakushima Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata yakui). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fecal samples of Yakushima Japanese macaques were collected from lowland, highlan…
