  • Carbon and Nitrogen Stable Isotopic Profiling of Chimpanzees and Monkeys in Kalinzu Forest Reserve, Uganda

Open Access•T Tsutaya, Natsumi Aruga et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2026

Stable isotope analysis is a widely used tool in primate ecology for investigating diet and environment, with numerous studies focusing on chimpanzees. However, few studies have used this method to explore the dietary niche of chimpanzees in comparison to other primates or examined intra‐individual dietary variability. This limitation hinders the understanding of the comparability of stable isotopic data with the wealth of behavioral observationa…

  • The first case of hunting and consuming an anomalure by chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii) in Kalinzu forest, Uganda

Open Access•Shimei Shirasawa, Hiroyuki Takemoto et al.•ARTICLE•Pan Africa News•2024

Hunting and meat-eating by chimpanzees have long been attracting researchers’ attention. Although chimpanzees consume various vertebrate species, the frequency of meat-eating and prey species differ among populations and groups. Here, we present the first documented case of chimpanzees consuming Lord Derby's anomalure in the Kalinzu forest, Uganda. Despite anomalure species inhabit some long-term field sites of chimpanzee, reports of chimpanzees …

  • Physical, behavioral, and hormonal changes in the resumption of sexual receptivity during postpartum infertility in female bonobos at Wamba

Open Access•Chie Hashimoto, Heungjin Ryu et al.•ARTICLE•Primates•2022

The operational sex ratio (OSR) is used as a predictor for the intensity of mating competition. While many factors affect the OSR, there tends to be a high male bias in primate species with long interbirth intervals and non-seasonal breeding, such as hominid apes. However, the OSR of bonobos ( Pan paniscus ) is lower than that of chimpanzees ( Pan troglodytes ), which is thought to reduce competitive and aggressive male behaviors. The low OSR of …

  • Molecular diversity of entodiniomorphid ciliate Troglodytella abrassarti and its coevolution with chimpanzees

    Open Access•Peter Vallo, Klára J Petrželková et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2012•References: 51

The entodiniomorphid ciliate Troglodytella abrassarti is a colonic mutualist of great apes. Its host specificity makes it a suitable model for studies of primate evolution. We explored molecular diversity of T. abrassarti with regard to large geographical distribution and taxonomic diversity of its most common host, the chimpanzee. We found a very low diversification of T. abrassarti in chimpanzees across Africa. Distribution of two types of T. a…
