  • The First Boat People

    Open Access•Stephen A Webb, S David Webb et al.•BOOK•First Boat People•2006

The First Boat People concerns how people travelled across the world to Australia in the Pleistocene. It traces movement from Africa to Australia, offering a new view of population growth at that time, challenging current ideas, and underscoring problems with the 'Out of Africa' theory of how modern humans emerged. The variety of routes, strategies and opportunities that could have been used by those first migrants is proposed against the very di…

  • Palaeopathology of Aboriginal Australians

    Open Access•Stephen Webb, Stephen G Webb•BOOK•Palaeopathology of Aboriginal…•1995

While their health has suffered enormously because of the arrival of the Europeans, it is assumed that Aboriginal people enjoyed good health before 1788. Using data collected from all parts of the continent, this 1995 book studies the health of Australia's original inhabitants over 50,000 years. It represents the first continental survey of its kind and is the first to quantify and describe key aspects of Australian hunter-gatherer health. The bo…

  • Prehistoric eye disease (trachoma?) in Australian Aborigines

    Open Access•Stephen Webb, Stephen G Webb•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1990•Citada por: 4•Referências: 11

This paper discusses an as yet undescribed lesion of the orbit in Australian Aboriginal skeletal populations. The rather high frequency and geographical distribution of the lesion suggests an association with a common, chronic eye infection. Using differential diagnosis to eleminate a variety of ophthalmic conditions, it is proposed that chronic trachoma may be a possible causative agent. Distribution of the lesion follows that of trachoma among …

  • Prehistoric Stress in Australian Aborigines

    Stephen D Webb, Stephen G Webb•BOOK•Prehistoric stress in Australian…•1989

Precontact Aboriginal health, disease, physiology and adaptation; based on data from skeletal collections; stress indicators - cribra orbitalia, dental hypoplasia and Harris lines; secondary stress indicators - non specific and treponemal, infection, osteoarthritis and trauma; nutritional, metabolic and/or physiological disorders; anaemia; behavioural and cultural factors; bone infection; palaeopathology.

  • Two possible cases of trephination from Australia

    Open Access•Stephen Webb, Stephen G Webb•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1988•Referências: 7

Cranial surgery has been performed for thousands of years among a wide range of cultures. Although the extent of its use has varied, ethnographically the operation has almost always been used as a form of medical treatment following cranial trauma or as a remedy for head pain. This paper describes two cases of cranial trauma on Australian Aboriginal remains from widely separated areas of the continent. The position and morphology of the trauma, a…

  • A congenital meningocoele in prehistoric Australia

    Open Access•Stephen Webb, Stephen G Webb et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1985•Citada por: 6•Referências: 14

This report concerns a congenital meningocoele in a young adult Aboriginal female from north‐western New South Wales, Australia. The fact that this individual reached adulthood throws new light on the attitude of these nomadic people towards such conditions. Evidence of this kind may prompt also a re‐evaluation by prehistorians and anthropologists of the popularly held belief that all such malformations were automatically eliminated by infanticid…
