  • Black adzes in the Early Neolithic of Belgium: Contribution of the Raman microspectrometry and petrography in characterization and sourcing

Open Access•Éric Goemaere, Anne Hauzeur et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Lithic Studies•2023

Early Neolithic (Linear Pottery Culture) adzes originate from settlements and workshops accompany the neolithization of Belgium. They are made from a wide range of extraregional lithic raw materials such as metamorphic green rocks (amphibolite) and black volcanic rocks (“basalt’) beside more local or regional raw material as flints, light-coloured (sedimentary and lightly metamorphic) quartzites, black lydites (Cambrian nodular phtanite of Céroux…

  • A Multidisciplinary Approach to Neolithic Life Reconstruction

    Open Access•Gwenaëlle Goude, Domingo C Salazar‐garcía et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Method…•2018•Cited by: 14•References: 25

The expansion of Neolithic stable isotope studies in France now allows distinct regional population-scale food patterns to be linked to both local environment influences and specific economic choices. Carbon and nitrogen isotope values of more than 500 humans and of animal samples also permit hypotheses on sex-biased human provenance. To advance population scale research, we here present the first study that draws together carbon (C), nitrogen (N…

  • Geochemical Sourcing of Flint Artifacts from Western Belgium and the German Rhineland: Testing Hypotheses on Gravettian Period Mobility and Raw Material Economy

Open Access•Luc Moreau, Maria Brandl et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2016•Cited by: 17•References: 24

Identifying the geological and geographical origin of lithic raw materials is critical to effectively address prehistoric forager raw material economies and mobility strategies. Currently, Paleolithic archaeology in Belgium lacks a systematic sourcing strategy to effectively substantiate detailed interpretations of prehistoric hunter‐gatherer behavioral change across time and space. This pilot study evaluates the potential to “fingerprint” flint …

    Open Access•Anne Hauzeur, Hartwig Löhr•ARTICLE•Palethnologie•2009

  • Arrowhead Lateralization: Recent Data from the Mosel Region in the Context of the North-West Linear Pottery Culture

    Open Access•Anne Hauzeur, Hartwig Löhr•ARTICLE•Palethnologie•2009

Several recent excavations of sites attributed to the Linear Pottery Culture (LPC) in the middle Mosel region have considerably increased the number of assemblages available for study. Typological and morphological analyses of arrowheads have been conducted with special attention to their significant role in cultural identities. In this context, the Mosel Valley is located in a geographic zone that links economic and cultural traditions. The assem…

  • New data on the late Neandertals: Direct dating of the Belgian Spy fossils

Open Access•Patrick Semal, Hélène Rougier et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2009•Cited by: 105•References: 19

In Eurasia, the period between 40,000 and 30,000 BP saw the replacement of Neandertals by anatomically modern humans (AMH) during and after the Middle to Upper Paleolithic transition. The human fossil record for this period is very poorly defined with no overlap between Neandertals and AMH on the basis of direct dates. Four new 14 C dates were obtained on the two adult Neandertals from Spy (Belgium). The results show that Neandertals survived to …
