  • Molecular characterisation of sickle cell disease and classification of major haplotypes associated with the β-globin cluster (HBB gene) by means of SNP marker sequencing in a group of samples from Bo…

Open Access•Marcela Díaz-Matallana, Ignacio Briceño et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•2024

SCD characterisation and SNPs-based classification through Sanger's DNA sequencing have not been performed before in Colombia. The results of this work will make it possible to expand the data or records of carriers and those affected, which will benefit patients and their families

  • Colombia’s racial crucible

Open Access•María Claudia Noguera-Santamaría, María Claudia Noguera et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•2013

Heterogeneous patterns of admixture reveal a genetic substructure within the Department of Bolivar. On the paternal side, five out of the six communities studied exhibit a predominantly European gene pool. The exception is Palenque, where European input (38%) is more significant than we had expected

  • High genetic diversity on a sample of pre-Columbian bone remains from Guane territories in northwestern Colombia

    Open Access•Andrea Casas‐Vargas, Andrea Casas-Vargas et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2011•Cited by: 5•References: 49

Ancient DNA was recovered from 17 individuals found in a rock shelter in the district of "La Purnia" (Santander, Colombia). This region is the homeland of pre-Columbian Guane, whom spread over the "Río Suarez" to the "Río de Oro", and were surrounded to the west by the Central Andes, south and east by foothills of Eastern Andes, and north by the "Chicamocha" river canyon. Guanes established in a region that straddles the Andes and the northern Am…

  • Biological relationship between central and South American Chibchan speaking populations

    Open Access•Phillip E Melton, Ignacio Briceño et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2007•Cited by: 7•References: 75

We examined mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) haplogroup and haplotype diversity in 188 individuals from three Chibchan (Kogi, Arsario, and Ijka) populations and one Arawak (Wayuú) group from northeast Colombia to determine the biological relationship between lower Central American and northern South American Chibchan speakers. mtDNA haplogroups were obtained for all individuals and mtDNA HVS‐I sequence data were obtained for 110 samples. Resulting seque…

  • Complement C3 polymorphism in sixteen populations of Colombia. Results of “Expedicion humana”

Open Access•Jaime E Bernal, Piedad Sarmiento et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1995

Blood samples of 1.022 individuals of both sexes, collected during the “Expedicion Humana” programme. Twelve Indian group, two Negroes, two urban and one mestizo populations of Colombia were C3 typed. The results showed the urban samples have C3*F genotype frequencies (17 and 20%) similar to the Spanish population. The Negroe system, with lower C3*F gene frequencies (3.5 and 7%) also resembled their parental populations in Africa. The Mestizo pop…

  • HLA antigens (A,B,C and D) among two groups of Guahiboan speaking Indians in Colombia. “Results of expedicion humana”

    Open Access•Jaime E Bernal, C Durán et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1995

The serological HLA types (A,B,C and D loci) were studied in the Sikuani and Guayabero, two Guahiboan speaking Indian groups inhabiting the eastern lowlands of Colombia. Besides restricted polymorphism, the results show significant differences only in two antigens, A2 and B35, suggesting genetic similarity among these tribes which belong to the same linguistic family. Genetic distances were calculated for comparison with other Colombian groups so…

  • Genetic and environmental influences on serum levels of human C4

    Open Access•B K Averill, Jaime E Bernal•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1984

In a family study, levels of the C4 component of complement measured in 195 individuals show a continuous normal distribution. There is a slight but significant age effect, especially in females. Heritability is estimated at 62%. The effect of environment, however, remains substantial, and it is suggested that at some time during development the mechanism controlling the C4 levels establishes a general steady-state level whose effects remain afte…

  • The contribution of genetic disease to paediatric mortality in a university hospital in bogota

    Open Access•Jaime E Bernal, G Ortega et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•1983

The records of 15 years of paediatric necropsies in the Department of Pathology of the Hospital San Ignacio in Bogota were reviewed and the results classified according to the various types of genetic pathology. It is shown that out of 1463 paediatric necropsies, 377 (25·8%) had either a congenital defect or a disease considered as genetic to some extent. Simple Mendelian diseases and chromosomal disorders account together for more than 5% of the…

    Open Access•R A Nahar, Jaime E Bernal et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Evolution•1982
