  • Oral health knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) in rural Haiti: A 40‐year follow‐up study

    Open Access•Ralph V Katz, S Prophete et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•2018

This paper reports the changed findings over a 40-year period on oral health knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of a very remote and rural population living the Jeremie region of Haiti. The far-sighted investigators of that original 1970 survey stated in their published 1972 paper that our "...findings are descriptive, but have to be accepted tentatively rather than definitively because time was short, transportation was difficult, and the…

  • Effect of early childhood protein‐energy malnutrition on permanent dentition dental caries

    Open Access•Elisandra Reyes‐Perez, Luisa N Borrell et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•2013

ECPEM status is inversely associated with DMFT in Haitian participants. Further follow-up of these same participants will be recommended to evaluate the potential caries catch-up effect

  • Identifying the “vulnerables” in biomedical research: The vox populis from the Tuskegee Legacy Project

    Open Access•Christopher T Chiu, Ralph V Katz•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•2011

The response patterns on "who was vulnerable" were similar for the two minority groups (Black people and Mainland US PR Hispanics), and notably different from the response patterns of the two majority groups (White people and SJ PR Hispanics). Further, the vox populis definition of vulnerables differed from the current official definitions as used by the U.S. federal government

  • Identifying the Tuskegee Syphilis Study: Implications of results from recall and recognition questions

    Open Access•Ralph V Katz, Germain Jean-Charles et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2009

The two major implications of these findings for health disparity researchers are 1) that it is unlikely that detailed knowledge of the Tuskegee Syphilis Study has any current widespread influence on the willingness of minorities to participate in biomedical research, and 2) that caution should be applied before assuming that what community leaders 'know and are aware of' is equally 'well known' within their community constituencies

  • Awareness of the Tuskegee Syphilis Study and the US Presidential Apology and Their Influence on Minority Participation in Biomedical Research

Ralph V Katz, S Stephen Kegeles et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2008•Cited by: 8•References: 20

Objectives. We compared the influence of awareness of the Tuskegee Syphilis Study and the presidential apology for that study on the willingness of Blacks, non-Hispanic Whites, and Hispanics to participate in biomedical research. Methods. The Tuskegee Legacy Project Questionnaire was administered to 1133 adults in 4 US cities. This 60-item questionnaire addressed issues related to the recruitment of minorities into biomedical studies. Results. Ad…

  • Bioethical Issues in Biostatistical Consulting: Development of a Survey

Open Access•Min Qi Wang, Ralph V Katz et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•2007

To develop a survey, the Bioethical Issues in Biostatistical Consulting Questionnaire, for investigating bioethical issues in analysis, a comprehensive literature review was conducted to specify areas of bioethics. Through a focus group study and the evaluation by 10 biostatisticians, the questionnaire was constructed. Validation must involve a panel of experts. Now, test-retest reliability and factor analysis should be conducted on a group of el…

  • Dental Caries in Twelve- and Fifteen-Year-Olds: Results from the Basic Oral Health Survey in Haiti

Open Access•Walter J Psoter, Hendy Jean et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•2005

The findings from this investigation suggest that at the population level, permanent dentition caries in early adolescence is a minimal health problem, relative to dental caries in other neighboring Caribbean countries, as well as to other health conditions in Haiti. However, at the individual level, those children afflicted with decay are without dental services for all practical purposes

  • Occlusal Dental Caries Incidence and Implications for Sealant Programs in a US College Student Population

Open Access•J Stahl, John W Stahl et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•1993

Given the decline in dental caries incidence in preteens and young teenagers in the United States, a study of the incidence of dental caries in young adults (17-23 years) was conducted to provide a descriptive epidemiologic picture of this "new" natural history of dental caries in the late and post-teenage years. A retrospective study was performed analyzing the detailed dental records of the four-year college experience in the class of 1989, US …

  • Joint Aads‐Iadr Symposium on Oral Health of US Adults‐ Nidr 1985 National Survey

Open Access•James D Beck, Ralph V Katz et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•1987

  • Interobserver reliability of methods for paleopathological diagnosis of dental caries

    Open Access•Joel D Rudney, Joel Rudney et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1983•Cited by: 10•References: 9

There is disagreement as to whether clinical methods of caries diagnosis will produce reliable results in skeletal material, and studies vary greatly in the extent to which such methods are employed. The purpose of this study is, therefore, to evaluate the interobserver reliability of visual, tactile, and radiographic methods of scoring dental caries in ancient populations. Thirty‐three individuals from a Mogollon skeletal sample were scored on t…

  • Assessing Root Caries in Populations: The Evolution of the Root Caries Index

    Open Access•Ralph V Katz•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•1980

This paper traces the history of the epidemiologic assessment of root caries over the past 30 years. This history clearly points out that a critical junction has been reached between the state-of-the art for the reporting of root caries and the demand placed on research and service components of the oral health system. If progress is to be made, it is imperative that a uniform reporting method for root caries be adopted. This paper introduces the…
