  • Breakfast skipping and health-compromising behaviors in adolescents and adults

    Open Access•A Keski-Rahkonen, Anna Keski‐Rahkonen et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Clinical…•2003

  • Autosomal, mitochondrial, and Y chromosome DNA variation in Finland

    Open Access•Rick A Kittles, Andrew W Bergen et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1999•References: 50

The high prevalence of rare genetic diseases in Finland has been attributed to a founder effect some 2,000 years ago. However, this hypothesis has not been supported from mtDNA sequence and autosomal microsatellite data which indicate high levels of gene diversity. Here we have identified genetic evidence for a population bottleneck by examining variable microsatellite loci on the nonrecombining portion of Y chromosomes from Finland and four popu…

  • Low blood glucose nadir in the glucose tolerance test and homicidal spouse abuse

    Open Access•Matti Virkkunen, Eila Kallio•ARTICLE•Aggressive Behavior•1987•References: 29

The purpose of the study was to investigate whether homicidal spouse abuse offenders with a low blood glucose nadir in glucose tolerance test (GTT) showed more instances of repeated and severe aggression and criminality than counterparts with more normal GTTs. An attempt was also made to determine whether personality profiles on the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) differentiated between the groups. Altogether, 60 male homicidal…

  • Insulin secretion during the glucose tolerance test among habitually violent and impulsive offenders

    Open Access•Matti Virkkunen•ARTICLE•Aggressive Behavior•1986•References: 34

Male habitually violent and impulsive offenders were studied by means of the glucose tolerance tests (GTTs) and insulin measurements. Both in intermittent explosive disorder and in violent antisocial personality, there was a tendency for there to be reactive hypoglycemia. There was a more rapid decline of glucose from hyperglycemia and more rapid return from hypoglycemia to the original basal values in intermittent explosive disorder than in viol…

  • Parental Deprivation and Recidivism in Juvenile Delinquents

Matti Virkkunen•ARTICLE•The British Journal of Criminology•1976•Cited by: 2

In the present study attempts were made to clarify the significance of parental deprivation (especially paternal) in the recidivism of young offenders. Paternal deprivation through death occurred as often in the recidivist group as in the control group. However, recidivists more seldom had step-fathers or adoptive fathers. In the recidivist group, the father's death had occurred more often in adolescence (between the ages 12 and 16) than at an ea…

  • Victim-Precipitated Pedophilia Offences

Matti Virkkunen•ARTICLE•The British Journal of Criminology•1975•Cited by: 2

The purpose of this study was to elucidate the typical features in those pedophilia cases, not incestuous, where the initiation of the acts was associated with the victim's precipitating behaviour. The study consisted of 64 cases of pedophilia, of which 31 (48-4 per cent.) had these characteristics. These manifested themselves in visits made to the offender on the victim's own initiative and in taking some kind of initiative in the offence itself…
