This essay deals with an unpopular topic: the indignities that increasingly plague people as they grow older and eventually become really old. Individual differences and the causes for same are indicated, as well as the variety of individual reactions. A brief clinical vignette is presented, in addition to a more extended one describing a woman who was in analysis for six years during her fifties and sixties, and who returned to treatment twenty …

  • Freud's views and the changing perspective on femaleness and femininity: What my female analysands taught me.

    Ruth F Lax•ARTICLE•Psychoanalytic Psychology•1995

In this article, I critically examine Freud's views on female psychosexual development and femininity. The effect of Freud's patriarchal bias on the manner in which his followers analyzed women and the goals they set for the analysis of women are shown via vignettes. Throughout the late 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s, feminism forced a reexamination of previously accepted Freudian postulates from without and within the psychoanalytic establishment. Thus…

  • Aspects of Primary and Secondary Genital Feelings and Anxieties in Girls During the Preoedipal and Early Oedipal Phases

    Ruth F Lax•ARTICLE•The Psychoanalytic Quarterly•1994•Cited by: 9•References: 20

The author examines the development of the girl's psychosexual feminine self-image during the preoedipal and early oedipal phases, as well as the accompanying primary and secondary genital feelings and anxieties. The connection between the little girl's discovery and pleasure in self-exploration and masturbation and related anxieties about being "closed-up" is discussed. The nature of the corresponding object relationships is elucidated, especial…

  • A Variation on Freud's Theme in “A Child is Being Beaten”—Mother's Role: Some Implications for Superego Development in Women

    Open Access•Ruth F Lax•ARTICLE•Journal of the American…•1992•Cited by: 2•References: 2

Clinical material is presented leading to a discussion of beating fantasies which varies from Freud's model. Analysis shows that the fantasied role girls assign to mother as the punisher in the oedipal drama is equivalent to the fantasied role boys ascribe to father as castrator. For both sexes, castration anxiety spurs the internalization of parental prohibitions, the repression of oedipal wishes, and the subsequent structuralization of the supe…
