The Impact of Psychoanalytic Theory and a Two-Person Psychology on the Empathising Analyst
Traditionally 'empathy' has been viewed from the perspective of a one-person psychology and 'the facts' discovered via empathic understanding have been thought to reflect accurately what the patient was experiencing, ideally uncontaminated by anything coming from the analyst. In contrast to this position, the author argues that the analyst always actively influences what he discovers empathically. Specifically, the analyst's theoretical biases al…
Psychoanalytic Dream Theory And Recent Neurobiological Findings About Rem Sleep
I have reviewed Hobson and McCarley's activation-synthesis hypothesis of dreaming which attempts to show that the instigation and certain formal aspects of dreaming are physiologically determined by a brainstem neuronal mechanism, their reasons for suggesting major revisions in psychoanalytic dream theory, and neurophysiological data that are inconsistent with their hypothesis. I then discussed the concept of mind-body isomorphism pointing out th…
Theoretical and Technical Problems in the Measurement of Nocturnal Penile Tumescence for the Differential Diagnosis of Impotence1
Theoretical and technical problems in using Nocturnal Penile Tumescence (NPT) measurements for the differential diagnosis of impotence are discussed and possible solutions are offered: 1) The basic assumption that NPT measurements can distinguish psychogenic from organic impotence has never been demonstrated in patients shown to be psychogenically and organically impotent independent of the NPT measurements themselves. Studies attempting to do th…
