  • Observations on Patterns of Subjective Symptomatology of Acute Asthma

    Robert A Kinsman, Sheldon L Spector et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1974

Five symptom categories have previously been identified which described the subjective symptoms experienced during asthma attacks: These include 2 mood symptom categories, panic-fear and irritability, describing affective states concomitant with asthma; 2 somatic symptom categories, hyperventilation-hypocapnia and airway obstruction, describing reports of more specific bodily symptoms; and fatigue, describing the reduced energy level accompanying…

  • Multidimensional Analysis of the Subjective Symptomatology of Asthma

    Robert A Kinsman, Thomas J Luparello et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1973

Characteristics of the subjective symptomatology of asthma were explored within a group of 100 asthma inpatients. Patients rated the relative frequency with which 77 symptom adjectives were associated with asthma attacks. Key cluster analysis of the full set of 77 adjectives identified 5 symptom clusters: Two Mood clusters, Panic-Fear and Irritability, describe affective states concomitant with asthma, while two Somatic clusters, Hyperventilation…

  • The Interaction of Psychologic Stimuli and Pharmacologic Agents on Airway Reactivity in Asthmatic Subjects

Thomas J Luparello, Nancy Leist et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1970

Two bronchoactive substances, isoproterenol and carbachol were presented by inhalation to 20 asthmatic subjects in a double blind study. Each drug was given under two conditions: in one case, the subject was told the drug was a bronchodilator; in the other, he was told it was a bronchoconstrictor. The bronchodilator effect of isoproterenol was greater when the subject was told it was a bronchodilator than when told it was a bronchoconstrictor. Si…

  • The Mechanism of Action of Suggestion in the Induction of Acute Asthma Attacks

    E R MCFADDEN, Thomas J Luparello et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1969

Asthmatic subjects inhaling nebulized physiologic saline solution were told that the substance was an allergen which each subject had indicated as the cause of his asthmatic attacks. Utilization of whole body plethysmography revealed that 15 subjects developed significant increases in airway resistance, but 14 did not. In repeat studies, 13 of the 15 reactors continued to respond with significant changes in airway resistance, while all of the non…

  • Influences of Suggestion on Airway Reactivity in Asthmatic Subjects

Thomas J Luparello, Thomas Luparello et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1968

The effect of suggestion on bronchomotor tone was evaluated in a setting in which accurate, rapid, and reproducible measurements of airway resistance (Ra) could be made. Subjects with asthma, emphysema, and restrictive lung disease, as well as normal subjects, were studied. All subjects were led to believe that they were inhaling irritants or allergens which cause bronchoconstriction. The actual substance used in all instances was nebulized physi…
