Using the Rorschach to Define Differences in Schizophrenics and the Implications for Treatment
A Research-Based Reconsideration of the Psychoanalytic Theory of Dreaming
We present a brief review of sleep research which, when combined with psychoanalytic experience, has led to the hypothesis that REM sleep and dreaming serve the function of adaptation by the process of integration of information. We then report the results of a study of dreams, based on this hypothesis. We studied dreams and their relation to waking mental activity and found a correlation between problems in manifest dreams and those in pre- and …
Depression: Variability of Intrapsychic and Sleep Parameters
In this study we consider the complexity of the condition known as depression. We studied both physiological and psychological aspects of the disorder by using psychodynamically oriented interviews, sleep EEGs, and dreams collected in the laboratory. We found considerable variability in the sleep, psychodynamic, and dream patterns. Some possible relations of these patterns to treatment results were noted. We discuss these findings in relation to …

REM Sleep and the Analytic Process: A Psychophysiologic Bridge
Recent research on the physiology of REM sleep has supported the hypothesis that it serves processes of psychologic adaptation. This study examines the relationship between physiologic parameters of REM sleep and evidence in analytic material of the need for adaptation. Significant correlations were found between defensive strain before sleep and REM latency, and between change in defensive strain from evening to morning and total REM time
Clinical Measurement in Psychoanalysis: An Approach
Measurement of the complex phenomena in psychoanalysis is approached by defining interrelated elements in the analytic situation and specifying the range of their variation in scales which can be both generalized and made specific for an individual patient. Using this approach in transcripts of psychoanalytic sessions, we rate painful emotion, impairment of defensive maneuvers, and activation of threatening conflictual fantasies. This preliminary…

Episodic Behavioral Disorders: A Psychodynamic and Neurophysiologic Analysis
The Effect of Dream (Stage REM) Deprivation on Adaptation to Stress
The role of dreaming in the assimilation and mastery of new experiences was examined in this study. Previous work had shown that a film of an autopsy can evoke measurable psychologic and physiologic indices of anxiety. Adaptation to the experience was indicated by lower levels of anxiety during a second viewing of the film. We examined the effect of dream (Stage REM) deprivation on adaptation to the second viewing. Between the first and second vi…
War neuroses and the adaptive function of REM sleep
Psychiatric Aspects of Idiopathic Cardiomyopathy
Idiopathic cardiomyopathy, in some cases, may be an ailment in which emotional factors constitute such a prominent pathogenic component that progressive worsening and death may occur if the emotional factors are not favorably altered. That is, emotional factors may serve as a contributing factor to the development and maintenance of the symptoms and perhaps to the pathology of idiopathic cardiomyopathy. Certainly, in selected instances, if not in…
