Learning What Comes Naturally: The Role of Life Experience in the Establishment of Species Typical Behavior
Variations in infant development and response to maternal loss in monkeys
Sustained physical contact between animals characterizes bonnet but not pigtail monkey groups. This pattern encourages maternal permissiveness and enhances social orientation in infants. Moreover, pigtail infants show depression and behavioral debilitation after maternal loss, whereas bonnets are often adopted by others and suffer minimal affective and behavioral changes
