  • Parental criticism and adolescent internalising symptoms

Open Access•Yasmin I Ahmadzadeh, Thalia C Eley et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Child Psychology and…•2022

BACKGROUND: Parental criticism is correlated with internalising symptoms in adolescent offspring. This correlation could in part reflect their genetic relatedness, if the same genes influence behaviours in both parents and offspring. We use a Children-of-Twins design to assess whether parent-reported criticism and offspring internalising symptoms remain associated after controlling for shared genes. To aid interpretation of our results and those …

  • A genetically informed study of associations between family functioning and child psychosocial adjustment

    Alice C Schermerhorn, Brian M D’onofrio et al.•ARTICLE•Developmental Psychology•2011•Cited by: 4•References: 20

Research has documented associations between family functioning and offspring psychosocial adjustment, but questions remain regarding whether these associations are partly due to confounding genetic factors and other environmental factors. The current study used a genetically informed approach, the Children of Twins design, to explore the associations between family functioning (family conflict, marital quality, and agreement about parenting) and…

  • Using Behavior Genetics Methods to Understand the Structure of Personality

Jody M Ganiban, Cindi Chou et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2009

The current study used factor analysis to assess the degree to which personality characteristics derived from different theories signify the same latent personality constructs, and biometric modeling to understand the genetic and environmental struct

  • Testing different types of genotype-environment correlation

    Jurgita Narusyte, Jenae M Neiderhiser et al.•ARTICLE•Developmental Psychology•2008•Cited by: 7•References: 9

This study presents an extended children-of-twins model, which allowed the authors to test the direction of the association between parenting and child adjustment. Three mechanisms were examined: direct phenotypic influence of parenting on child behavior (controlling for both parental and child genotype), passive genotype-environment correlation, and evocative genotype-environment correlation. This model was tested with Monte Carlo simulations. T…

  • Depression and Internally Directed Aggression

    Open Access•Suzanne K Haddad, David Reis et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of the American…•2008•References: 51

This study uses behavior genetic (BG) methodology to investigate Freud's theory of depression as aggression directed toward the self (1930) and the extent to which genetically and environmentally influenced aggressive tendencies contribute to depressive symptoms. Data from the Twin and Offspring Study in Sweden (TOSS) is used to demonstrate how, in estimating shared and unique environmental influences, BG methods can inform psychoanalytic theory …

  • Genetic and Environmental Influences on Mothering of Adolescents

    Jenae M Neiderhiser, David Reis et al.•ARTICLE•Developmental Psychology•2004•Cited by: 25•References: 61

This study examined 2 samples of adolescents and mothers using a child-based design (Nonshared Environment in Adolescent Development [NEAD] project, N = 395 families) and a parent-based design (Twin Moms [TM] project, N = 236 twin family pairs) to compare genetic and environmental influences on mothering. For both samples, the same measures of positivity, negativity, control, and monitoring were used. The use of matched child-based and parent-bas…

  • Genetic and Environmental Influences on Parenting and Marital Relationships

    Hilary Towers, Erica L Spotts et al.•ARTICLE•Marriage & Family Review•2003•Cited by: 2•References: 47

There have been an increasing number of studies that have examined genetic influences on measures of family relationships, which have typically been conceptualized as environmental. These measures include parenting, sibling relationships, marital relationships and divorce. The current review discusses these findings and presents newly emerging results that suggest the mechanisms that may be involved, at least in mother-child relationships. The be…

  • The Relation between Observational Measures of Social Problem Solving and Familial Antisocial Behavior

Open Access•Erica L Spotts, Jenae M Neiderhiser et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Research on Adolescence•2001•Cited by: 1

Deficits in social problem‐solving skills are often associated with antisocial behavior, particularly in children’s extrafamilial relationships. The current study was designed to examine this association in several new ways: the association was examined at two times in an adolescent sample within the context of the family; genetic models were used to estimate genetic and environmental effects on observational measures of problem solving and antis…
