  • Apocalypse now? Mortality and mental health correlates of the Doomsday Clock

Samuel Justin Sinclair, David Silbersweig et al.•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists•2025

This study explores the mortality and mental health correlates of the iconic Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists’ Doomsday Clock, using data published by the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the University of Washington’s Global Burden of Disease Collaborative Network. Results indicate strong, negative associations between the Clock settings and mortality specific to Alzheimer’s disease, suicide, unintentional inju…

  • Predictors of involuntary and voluntary emotional episodic memories of virtual reality scenarios in Veterans with and without PTSD

Loretta S Malta, Cezar Giosan et al.•ARTICLE•Memory•2020

This study investigated predictors of involuntary and voluntary memories of stressful virtual reality scenarios. Thirty-two veterans of the two Persian Gulf Wars completed verbal memory tests and diagnostic assessments. They were randomly assigned to a Recounting (16) or a Suppression (16) condition. After immersion in the VR scenarios, the Recounting group described the scenarios and the Suppression group suppressed thoughts of the scenarios. On…

  • Major Depressive Disorder in Medical Illness: A Review of Assessment, Prevalence, and Treatment Options

Robyn P Thom, Robyn Thom et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•2019

Major depression, as well as other depressive disorders, is commonly comorbid with other medical illnesses, particularly chronic and systemic medical illnesses. The co-occurrence of the disorders is so common that it challenges our notions of the meaning of comorbidity and our desire to neatly separate psychiatric and medical illnesses. The overlap between symptoms of physical illness and the neurovegetative symptoms of major depression and the i…

  • Promoting Health Equity Through Trauma-Informed Care: Critical Role for Physicians in Policy and Program Development

    Nomi C Levy‐Carrick, Nomi C Levy-Carrick et al.•ARTICLE•Family & Community Health•2019

Trauma-informed care has emerged as an important model to address the pervasiveness of traumatic experiences across the life cycle and their association with significant adverse medical and psychiatric consequences. To achieve health equity, in which all people have the opportunity for health, it is crucial for physicians to become comfortable with a neurobiopsychosocial understanding of trauma and how to provide optimal trauma-informed care. Giv…

  • Self-awareness, self-regulation, and self-transcendence (S-ART): A framework for understanding the neurobiological mechanisms of mindfulness

Open Access•David R Vago, David Silbersweig et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Human Neuroscience•2012

Mindfulness-as a state, trait, process, type of meditation, and intervention has proven to be beneficial across a diverse group of psychological disorders as well as for general stress reduction. Yet, there remains a lack of clarity in the operationalization of this construct, and underlying mechanisms. Here, we provide an integrative theoretical framework and systems-based neurobiological model that explains the mechanisms by which mindfulness r…

  • The Emerging Dialogue Between Psychoanalysis and Neuroscience: Neuroimaging Perspectives

    Open Access•Manfred E Beutel, Manfred Beutel et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of the American…•2003•Cited by: 5•References: 57

Current progress in the cognitive neurosciences is highly relevant to the development of psychoanalytic theory and practice. Neuroscience is today becoming mature enough to provide empirical biological approaches for the investigation of psychoanalytic models and observations. The current state of functional neuroimaging techniques is reviewed, selected paradigms and findings relevant to psychotherapy research are presented, and ways to pursue th…
