The New 14 C Analysis Laboratory in Jena, Germany
The new accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) Radiocarbon Analysis Laboratory in Jena is described. The laboratory developed a combustion system for solid samples and a CO 2 extraction system for air samples. Thus far, sample preparation, including graphitization, was performed in the laboratory, and the samples were measured subsequently by other AMS facilities. Currently, the laboratory owns a 3MV AMS system from HVEE (Netherlands) that has passe…

Shelter CaveThis human metacarpal was one of a collection of 34 human bones, all derived from a single adult skeleton, recovered in 1995 and 1996 from a stratified cave earth deposit in Shelter Cave-part of the Kitley Caves complex at Western Torrs Quarry, Yealmpton, Devon (NGR SX 57515123).The same stratigraphic layer produced undiagnostic flint flakes and a fragment of prehistoric pottery

Chemistry Strategies for Organic 14 C Samples
Pretreatment of organic samples can be achieved by removal of contaminants, or, alternatively, by isolation of sample-specific components. We discuss the molecular aspects of these two pretreatment types, together with an assessment of their effectiveness in relation to sample type. The main division in sample type is the one between carbohydrates and proteins, leading to opposite chemical strategies for the two sample categories. Recommendations…
Methodological Issues in the 14 C Dating of Rock Paintings
Chemical and isotopic analyses have been made of pigment samples from two separate rock art sites in Argentina. The purpose of the study has been to establish the feasibility of extracting carbonaceous material from the samples which will permit reliable radiocarbon dates for the time of painting. The two sites, Catamarca and Rio Negro, present quite different problems. Most of the paper is concerned with Catamarca, and here we have shown that th…

This twenty-third list of accelerator dates consists mainly of material dated since the beginning of 1994.but includes a number of measurements made earlier in the dating programme. The dates have been achieved by the methods described in Law and Hedges (1989), Hedges et uI.(1989; 1992).Determinations with OxA numbers greater than 2095 were measured on the CO, gas ion-source (Bronk and Hedges 1989) rather than on the previous iron-graphite system.…

It also includes, for the first time, a list of samples measured incollaboration with the Centre de Datation par le Radiocarbone de Lyon: Lyon samples both pretreated and measured at Oxford have been assigned Oxford laboratory numbers in the usual way, in addition t…

Comment (R. M. J.): the Pleistocene fauna from Steetley Wood Cave differs from any so far reported from Creswell Crags, less than 5 km to the south-west, in its limited range of speciesbear, wolf, fox, reindeer and a bovine (seemingly bison). In this it resembles the much larger faunal sample from Windy Knoll near Castleton, Derbyshire. The infinite age obtained offers no contradiction to the hypothesis that these and other equivalent assemblages…
A Review of Current Approaches in the Pretreatment of Bone for Radiocarbon Dating by AMS
Although the reliability of 14 C dates of bone has increased greatly since AMS methods permitted better pretreatment on smaller samples, most old, badly contaminated or severely weathered bone still give serious problems. Several groups have recently proposed improvements to sample purification methods, often supported by a number of 14 C measurements. We present here an overview of these improvements. The issue is complicated by the following: 1…
Developments in Sample Combustion to Carbon Dioxide, and in the Oxford AMS Carbon Dioxide Ion Source System
We describe the operation of a commercial system as modified for preparation of CO 2 for the CO 2 source. AMS samples are automatically combusted in a CHN analyzer, and stable isotope measurements are made on line. We describe the performance of this equipment, with reference to yield, sample contamination, memory effect, accuracy of isotope measurement, convenience and cost. We discuss the current status of dating using the CO 2 source. This is …

Cnn~merzt (V. J.): the chironomid dates are substantially younger than the corresponding bulk dates. They also show a date reversal at 150-153 cm, which is not apparent from the bulk dates. Although the conventional dates in this part of the core d o not appcar to be influenced by old I4C from catchment erosion (Stevenson rr ul. 1990) this possibility cannot be entirely discounted. Therefore it is very diflicult to evaluate whether the chironomid…

OxA-2780 agrees with the deep water fauna to be expected in middle Holocene times. 0xA-'781 is too old for the Holocene Loch Lomond Stadial boundary, but confirms the view from detailed lithological and palaeontological investigation that there is an unconformity below the middle Holocene and that the upper Loch Loniond Stadial and basal Holocene strata are missing.
