Radiocarbon Dating of a Late Antique Necropolis From Felanitx (Mallorca, Balearic Islands)
The excavation of a building in the village of Felanitx in the eastern part of the island of Mallorca (Balearic Islands) has revealed the existence of a small necropolis. The inhumations did not provide grave goods except for a bronze belt buckle for which the typological study suggests a Late Antique chronology. The stratigraphical sequence however seems to suggest a possible evolution of the space across time since some graves are cut by others…
Technological Choices in Hand‐Made Indigenous Pottery from Western Mallorca (Balearic Islands, Spain) (C.1200–75 bc )
This paper addresses the technological choices observed in Mallorca (Spain) for the production of hand‐made pottery during the Late Bronze and Iron Age. We have conducted a diachronic analysis of the ceramic assemblages recovered from two archaeological sites placed in the same territory by means of X‐ray fluorescence and optical microscopy by thin‐section analysis. The archaeometric characterization of the hand‐made vessels allows us to establis…
Archaeometric Characterization of Amphorae from the Late Antique City of Emporiae (Catalonia, Spain)
The aim of this work is to present the results of the archaeometric characterization of amphorae recovered at the Late Antique city of Emporiae, currently Sant Martí d'Empúries (Catalonia, Spain). A total of 53 amphora samples have been analysed using a combination of techniques, including X‐ray fluorescence, X‐ray diffraction and optical microscopy by thin‐section analysis. The integrated results shed light on the provenance of these materials, …
Ceramic Ethnoarchaeometry in Western S ardinia
Ceramic ethnoarchaeology has been used to explore fully the chaîne opératoire and to understand all of the stages and factors involved in pottery production, such as raw material selection or paste recipes used by the potters. This work presents the results of the application of compositional analysis undertaken in the village of P abillonis (western S ardinia, I taly), the main cooking ware production centre of the island. Pottery and local clay…
Compositional Analyses of Mortars from the Late Antique Site of S on P eretó ( M allorca, B alearic I slands, S pain)
The paper presents the mineralogical, petrographic and chemical analyses of mortars from an Early C hristian complex found in M allorca ( B alearic I slands) and dated to between the fifth and the eighth centuries ad . We characterized several mortars found at the site, in order to gather information on the raw materials used, as well as on the technology of production, and similarities among the samples. The analyses were aimed at solving specif…
Chemical Variability in Clays and Pottery from a Traditional Cooking Pot Production Village
This paper explores analytically the contemporary pottery‐making community of Pereruela (north‐west Spain) that produces cooking pots from a mixture of red clay and kaolin. Analyses by different techniques (XRF, NAA, XRD, SEM and petrography) showed an extremely high variability for cooking ware pottery produced in a single production centre, by the same technology and using local clays. The main source of chemical variation is related to the use…
