The first results of archaeometric characterization and provenance studies of Byzantine amphorae from Poland
This paper reports on the results of the archaeometric characterization and provenance study of 27 fragments of medieval amphorae dating to the 11 th – 13 th century, recovered from the Czermno hillfort (chronicle name: Cherven’ ) – one of the most important sites in the early medieval Polish-Rus’ border zone. Two main groups of amphorae were identified through petrographic and elemental analysis. Comparison of WD-XRF results with the database of…
Between the Byzantine and the Islamic worlds? Byzantine Polychrome White Ware
Byzantine Polychrome White Ware (PWW) is special among Byzantine glazed ceramics. It stands out by its sophisticated motifs and its uses, as architectural ceramics and icons, in addition to tableware. This study is based on about 30 sherds of PWW pottery coming from archaeological contexts dated back to the 10th and 11th c., in Greece (Hierissos and other sites in Chalkidiki) and Turkey (Saraçhane in Istanbul). It shows their Constantinopolitan o…
Connecting Late Roman and Early Byzantium: Investigating the technological tradition of 6th c. AD glazed wares from Northern Greece and Bulgaria
Glazed wares found in Thasos (Greece) and in a pottery workshop in Sofia (Bulgaria) in 6th c. AD contexts were investigated using WD-XRF (body analysis) and SEM-EDS (glaze analysis). In both cases, they associate low-calcareous bodies and high-lead glazes, with lead compounds probably applied without the addition of silica before a single firing. This technical tradition is common to the 4th−5th c. Late Roman glazed wares studied so far, from the…
Provenances and production techniques of the so‐called ‘Port Saint Symeon ware’ (13th–early 14th centuries ce ) from Kinet Höyük (Cilicia, Turkey): Witnessing interactions in the medieval north‐easter…
One of the most widely distributed ceramics in the North‐eastern Mediterranean during the 13th century ce was the ceramic commonly called ‘Port Saint Symeon ware’, whose iconography reflects multicultural influences and traditions. Samples coming mainly from the archaeological site of Kinet Höyük (Cilicia, Turkey), as well as from several sites in the Mediterranean, enabled us to define the output of two production centres of Port Saint Symeon wa…
Multidisciplinary approaches to food and foodways in the medieval Eastern Mediterranean

It presents the output of the POMEDOR project “People, pottery and food in the medieval Eastern Mediterranean” funded by the French National Research Agency.

Preliminary results of the organic residue analysis of 13th century cooking wares from a household in Frankish Paphos (Cyprus)
Organic residue analysis was carried out on kitchen wares from a Medieval household at Paphos (Cyprus) in the framework of the POMEDOR Project, which aims to gain insight into food practices in the Eastern Mediterranean during the Medieval period. The samples were selected from a household assemblage which included nearly two hundred table, cooking and storage vessels, and provided a rare insight into everyday life in Frankish-period Paphos. Both…
Moulded ware production in the Early Turkish/Beylik period in western Anatolia: A case study from Ephesus and Miletus

We currently accept that several twelfth–thirteenth century types, such as ‘Green and Brown Painted Ware’, ‘Fine Sgraffito Ware’ and ‘Aegean Ware’, form part of a single, …
Ceramics of the 'Serçe Limanı type' and Fatimid pottery production in Beirut
Fatimid ceramics from Beirut and from the Serçe Limanı shipwreck (Turkey) were investigated by chemical analysis. Beirut samples were shown to be chemically similar to local reference material dated back to the Crusader period, thus confirming the hypothesis of a Fatimid pottery production in Beirut. This production included cooking wares and bowls of a type found in the Serçe Limanı shipwreck. Analyses of ceramics from the shipwreck support an o…

Excavation of a medieval shipwreck at Novy Svet, Crimea, Ukraine, revealed an exceptional quantity of glazed ceramics with sgraffito decoration which, according to chemical analysis, correspond to a single production provisionally named ‘Novy Svet Ware’. Typological and analytical definitions are given. Its diffusion in the Crimea and extending to Turkey and the Levant, points to a main, as yet unlocated, workshop. The Novy Svet shipwreck suggest…
