  • A Study of Chinese Porcelain Raw Materials for Ding, Xing, Gongxian and Dehua Wares

    Open Access•C T YAP, YOUNAN HUA•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•1994

The raw material used largely determines the type and quality of porcelain produced. Twenty-three raw materials used for making Ding, Xing, Gongxian and Dehua porcelain bodies were studied using principal component analysis. Results show that for Dehua wares, only one raw material was used. For Ding wares, although there were many possible raw materials, the use of one alone is unlikely. Lingshan clay was the main raw material but it has to be mi…

  • Archaeology and Early Chinese Glass Trade in Southeast Asia

    Open Access•John N Miksic, C T YAP et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Southeast Asian Studies•1994•Cited by: 1•References: 14

When trade between China and Southeast Asia blossomed between the eleventh and fourteenth centuries, Chinese traders began to form overseas Chinese communities. Their presence had significant effects on the region, including the formation of new urban settlements and the introduction of new lifestyles in which imported items played an important part, not only among the elite, but among many hinterland groups who probably never saw a Chinese trade…

  • Analysis of trace elements in soft drinks using total reflection X‐ray fluorescence spectrometry

    C T YAP, K V R Gunawardena•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1989

Quantitative trace element analysis was made on soft drinks using the total reflection X‐ray fluorescence (TXRF) technique with a cut‐off reflector, reducing the background caused by the scattering of primary photons. A simple direct sample preparation method was employed whereby 4 μ1 of the soft drink was micropipetted on to an optically‐flat suprasil reflective substrate for multi‐elemental analysis and the results discussed. The method is fast…

  • A quantitative spectrometric analysis of trace concentrations of manganese and cobalt in ceramics and the significance of and ratios

    Open Access•C T YAP•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•1988•Cited by: 2

  • Simultaneous multi‐elemental quantitative analysis of Chinese pharmacopoea by EDXRF technique for samples of intermediate thickness

    C T YAP, Sumpun Wongnawa et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1987

Quantitative elemental analysis was made on 22 different types of Chinese herbal medicine by EDXRF technique. The concentrations of the elements were determined by measuring the intensities of the fluorescent X‐rays and transmittances of such samples in the form of a pellet of intermediate thickness. The results showed the presence of non‐herbal constituents which were not indicated in the ingredient list and some of which have potent toxicities …

  • Edxrf quantitative elemental analysis of facial creams by thin samples using annular sources Fe‐55, Cd‐109 and Am‐241

    C T YAP, V Leenanupan•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1986

Energy‐dispersive X‐ray fluorescence technique was used to study the elemental compositions of 20 different brands of facial creams. Three annular radioisotope sources (55Fe, 109Cd and 241Am) were used, covering elements from around silicon onwards. The method of thin samples was used and samples were exposed at a fixed geometrical configuration and also at a particular source‐sample distance where the fluorescent intensity as seen by the detecto…

  • XRF Analysis of Nonya Wares Using an Annular Americium Source

    Open Access•C T YAP•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•1986•Cited by: 2•References: 6

54 pieces of Nonya wares (also known as Straits Chinese porcelains) were analysed using energy‐dispersive X‐ray fluorescence technique with an annular Am‐241 source. Significant time correlation was found for only two elements, barium and cesium, when the ratio of the fluorescent intensity of each element to the intensity of the coherently scattered 26.4 keV gamma was plotted as a function of the time of manufacture. For trace barium, quantitativ…

  • Energy‐dispersive X‐ray Fluorescence Analysis of Chinese Porcelains Using Am‐241

    Open Access•C T YAP, S M TANG•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•1985•Cited by: 5•References: 3

Americium‐241 source was used to investigate elements whose fluorescent X‐ray energies are between about 25 and 40 keV. We did not find any correlation between the amount of the elements present and the time of manufacture except for barium, which can therefore be used to detect modern reproductions. This method of detection is both quick and non‐destructive

  • X‐ray Fluorescence Analysis of Modern and Recent Chinese Porcelains

    Open Access•C T YAP, S M TANG•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•1984•Cited by: 4•References: 1

X‐ray fluorescence analysis of modern and recent Chinese porcelains shows that the Mn/Co ratio is about 2.5 and above for those made before World War II and less than 0.7 for those made after the war
