  • Characterization of a Magdalenian Composite Adhesive Lump From the Ćmielów 95 Site, Poland

Open Access•Łukasz Kruszewski, Leszek Marynowski et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2026

A unique, black, plastic object recovered from a Magdalenian dwelling structure at the site of Ćmielów 95 using a multi‐instrumental approach to assess Upper/Late Paleolithic adhesive technology. Multimethodological analyses reveal that the object is a sophisticated, artificially synthesized composite binder comprising an organic matrix and inorganic mineral fillers. The minerals include metallic iron, maghemite, defect olivine, and monticellite—…

  • Phytogenic Hillocks as Ecological Indicators of Long‐Term Vegetation Development on Temperate‐Zone Inland Dunes

Open Access•Oimahmad Rahmonov, Tadeusz Szczypek et al.•ARTICLE•Land Degradation and Development•2026

Phytogenic hillocks, or nebkhas, are commonly found in arid and semi‐arid regions, but can also form in temperate zones, particularly in areas where forests on sandy soils have been cleared. In such environments, they play a key role in stabilizing and facilitating the regeneration of ecosystems. This study was conducted in the extensive inland sand region known as the Błędowska Desert (southern Poland), which developed as a result of anthropogen…

  • Thermal transformation of chalcedonite artefacts from the Magdalenian site of Ćmielów 95”Mały Gawroniec” (Poland)

    Open Access•Ewelina Miśta-Jakubowska, Łukasz Kruszewski et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2022•References: 34

Two chalcedonite artefacts from the Magdalenian site of Ćmielów 95 (Poland), with macroscopic features suggestive of thermal treatment, were subjected to a multi‐instrumental analysis. The red upper layer of the objects consists of ”protohematite”, implying temperature‐driven, goethite‐to‐hematite transition. The red layer shows traces of carbonized matter with saccharides and levoglucosan (from burning wood) as well as fatty acids. PXRD data sug…
