Ceramic supply at the Uzundara Hellenistic fortress on the Bactrian-Sogdian border
Continuity and change in coarse ware manufacture in North-Western Bactria between the Kushan and high medieval periods
Multidisciplinary Approach to the Study of Tableware and Common Wares from Early Medieval Tokharistan
Between the 5th and 8th centuries AD, several (semi-)nomadic populations invaded ancient Tokharistan (Central Asia), introducing political, socio-economic and cultural changes that also affected pottery production. The study of ceramic materials thereby represents a useful tool for shedding light on the transformations related to such historical events. Unfortunately, no systematic research on ceramics from this region and this period has been co…

Firewood exploitation in the Amu Darya valley of Uzbekistan from ca. 300 BCE to ca. 1400 CE
Analysis of charcoal from Termez and other sites in the Amu Darya basin (300 BCE-1400 CE) reveals the use of firewood from riparian forests. • Shifts in the consumption of riparian taxa highlight human impacts on local ecosystems and fuelwood exploitation over time. • Changes in riparian taxa over time indicate the impact of human activities on local ecosystems and species availability. • The presence of economic and cultivated species indicates …
Archaeometric investigations of the Molali pottery complex (Bronze Age, Uzbekistan)
Pottery of the steppe piedmonts of the Bactro-Sogdian Borderlands
Iskandar Tepa is a recently excavated rural settlement site in the steppe piedmonts of the Kugitang, the westernmost foothills of the Pamir-Alay Mountain range in south Uzbekistan. Archaeological and numismatic investigation suggests that the site might have belonged to the system of outposts or watch-posts serving the strategic needs of the last Greco-Bactrian rulers to control the Sogdian-Bactrian borderlands and especially to control the commu…
Early Medieval coarse wares from northern Bactria-Tokharistan. Archaeological and archaeometric characterization
Zooarchaeology of ancient Termez (Uzbekistan)
Islamic glazed wares from ancient Termez (southern Uzbekistan). Raw materials and techniques
Le transport maritime du vin léétanien au haut Empire. L’apport du gisement d’amphores du cap Gros (Port-Vendres)
The underwater deposit of cape Gros has been the subject of surveys in recent years. It has not yielded any significant remains of a ship, but corresponds to a shipwreck site, as shown by several tenuous elements. On the other hand, it has yielded the remains of a cargo of Pascual 1 amphorae. Archaeometric analyses have shown that this very homogeneous cargo comes from the same area, and probably from the same workshop located in the vicinity of …
The first combined archaeological and archaeometric analyses on Bronze Age pottery from Kyrgyzstan (Uch Kurbu site)
The biggest Opus doliare production in Narbonese Gaul revealed by archaeometry (first to second centuries A.D.)
This article presents an overview of recent research on dolia (large storage jars) from the former province of Narbonese Gaul. It aims to bring to light a poorly known aspect of the Roman period, namely the production and diffusion of dolia, thought archaeometrical evidences. Thus, the largest workshop of dolia in Narbonese Gaul has been recognized by combining archaeometrical, geological and archaeological data
Islamic Pottery from Ancient Termez (Uzbekistan)
The study deals with the Islamic pottery from Termez (southern Uzbekistan), with a special focus on the wares dated to the 9th-12th centuries. The city was a major urban settlement, along one of the routes of the Silk Road. Ceramics, both glazed and unglazed, were produced in several workshops located in the lower city (shahristan) and its suburbs (rabad). Glazed and unglazed wares, including cooking pots, two pottery moulds and two sphero-conica…
The Islamic Ancient Termez Through the Lens of Ceramics
This paper presents an archaeological and archaeometric study of a range of Islamic ceramics (9th-17th centuries) from Termez (south Uzbekistan), a city which has been proven to be both a production centre and a trading post. Pottery was manufactured in a number of workshops located in the lower city (shahristan) and its suburbs (rabad) and is consistent with the products of the most important Central Asian centres. For the first time, the fabric…
Assessing Hellenistic to nomadic cultural patterns through pottery in ancient Termez, Uzbekistan
We present the archaeological contextualization and the archaeometric characterization of slipped and nonslipped tableware and common wares from Termez in south Uzbekistan. The aims are, first, to evaluate the manufacture of pottery in the city and region (ancient Bactria) after the conquest of Alexander the Great in the late 4th century B.C. so as to detect Hellenistic Mediterranean influences, and, second, to investigate the evolution in potter…

Pottery in Hellenistic tradition from ancient Bactria
Tableware in the Hellenistic Tradition from the City of Kampyr Tepe in Ancient Bactria (Uzbekistan)
Slipped and unslipped wares from Kampyr Tepe dated to the Hellenistic–Seleucid and Greco‐Bactrian periods stylistically resemble tableware from the Greek tradition. Since two pottery workshops have been recovered at the site, the aim is to shed light on the provenance and the production and consumption patterns of the tableware, as well as on the degree of technological influence from Hellenistic–Mediterranean traditions. The archaeometric charac…
Pottery Production in the Buddhist Communities in Central Asia
We present the first full archaeometrical study of Kushan-Sassanian pottery from the Buddhist monastic complexes at Kara Tepe (Termez, Uzbekistan), recovered both in the pottery workshop and in the monastery, using a combination of analytical methods (XRF, XRD, SEM–EDS and OM). The study allowed the identification of the reference group, the correspondent fabric, the raw materials used for its productions, some of the technological processes invo…
The Port-Vendres 4 Shipwreck Cargo
The Port-Vendres 4 shipwreck is evidence of coastal export trade between Hispania Citerior and Narbonne in 40/30 BC. The cargo is made up of a particular assemblage of Roman wine amphoras (Pascual 1, Dressel 1B and Lamboglia 2) destined for Gallic markets. Archaeological and archaeometric analyses conducted on a selection of the amphoras allowed the provenance of the cargo to be identified as Hispania Citerior and the central-southern Tyrrhenian …
