  • Pottery technology in the Tang dynasty (ninth century ad ): Archaeometric analyses of a Gongyi sherd found at Siraf, Iran

    Open Access•Michela Spataro, N Wood et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 4

In 1969–70, a single Tang dynasty blue‐spotted Gongyi sherd was found at Siraf, Iran, the main trading port on the Persian Gulf in the early Islamic period. This is the only known example of Chinese blue‐and‐white ware, whether low‐ or high‐fired, found in the Middle East from such an early date. The sherd provides direct archaeological evidence for the Indian Ocean trade between China and the Middle East in the ninth century ad . The body paste,…

  • Scientific Investigation of Faience Fragments Attributed to the T Own M Osaic at K Nossos

    Open Access•Michela Spataro, N MEEKS et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2013•Cited by: 1•References: 5

We analysed a faience fragment from B ristol M useum and A rt G allery, to determine whether it belonged to the T own M osaic, excavated at K nossos. Three T own M osaic fragments from the A shmolean M useum, O xford were also examined. The objects were analysed using non‐destructive variable‐pressure scanning electron microscopy with energy‐dispersive X ‐ray spectrometry. The B ristol object's composition and microstructures are similar to those…

  • The technology of early platinum plating: A gold mask of the La Tolita culture, Ecuador

Open Access•N MEEKS, Susan La Niece et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2002•Cited by: 2

A metallurgical study of platinum plating on a gold pendant of the La Tolita culture of northern Ecuador was carried out, using high‐magnification examination by scanning electron microscopy with analytical facilities. The plating layer was found to comprise a 25 μm thick foil of platinum grains sintered with a gold–silver alloy. The high silver content of this alloy suggests the deliberate selection of pale‐coloured, silver‐rich alluvial gold. T…
