  • The Influence of Soil Organic Matter Age Spectrum on the Reconstruction of Atmospheric 14 C Levels Via Stalagmites

    Open Access•J Fohlmeister, B Kromer et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2011•Cited by: 13•References: 41

The imprint of the radiocarbon bomb peak was detected in the top of stalagmite ER-77 from Grotta di Ernesto (NE Italy). This recently grown stalagmite reveals a reservoir age, also known as dead carbon fraction (dcf), of ≃1050 14 C yr, or 12%. By applying a 14 C soil-karst model, the age spectrum of soil organic matter (SOM) as well as the CO 2 contribution of the single SOM reservoirs to the total soil CO 2 can be derived. Under the assumption o…

  • The Influences of Hydrology on the Radiogenic and Stable Carbon Isotope Composition of Cave Drip Water, Grotta di Ernesto (Italy)

    Open Access•J Fohlmeister, A Schröder-Ritzrau et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2010•Cited by: 7•References: 36

14 C and δ 13 C values of C-containing species in cave drip waters are mainly controlled by the C isotope composition of karst rock and soil air, as well as by soil carbon dynamics, in particular the amount of soil CO 2 in the unsaturated soil zone and the process of calcite dissolution. Here, we investigate soil carbon dynamics by analyzing the 14 C activity and δ 13 C values of C dissolved in cave drip water. Monthly over a 2-yr period, we coll…

  • Investigation of the stable isotope fractionation in speleothems with laboratory experiments

    Open Access•E Wiedner, D Scholz et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2008

  • Th/U dating of the Trojan ‘water quarries’

    Open Access•Norbert Frank, A Mangini et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2002•Cited by: 2

We determined the 230 Th/U ages of individual calcite layers that grew on the walls of artificial water‐supply tunnels (‘water quarries’) at Troy/Ilios by using thermal ionization mass spectrometry. The oldest age of overgrowth being 4350 ± 570 years, the tunnels must have been built a short time earlier, during the archaeological period Troy I–II. The tunnels were also used during Troy VI–VII (1700–1150 bce, a period that includes the date of th…
