  • Use of cinnabar in funerary practices in the Central Pyrenees. Analysis of pigments on bones from the prehistoric burial of the Cueva de la Sierra cave in Campodarbe (Huesca, Spain)

    Open Access•José María Rodanés-Vicente, José Antonio Cuchí-Oterino et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2023

The appearance of red pigments in prehistoric burial sites is frequent. In the study presented herein, the composition and provenance of the pigment sprinkled in a burial dated between the Late Neolithic and Early Chalcolithic periods in the Cueva de la Sierra, in Campodarbe (Huesca, Spain), were characterized through X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Raman spectroscop…

  • Physico-chemical characterisation of remains from a Bronze Age ochre-burial in Biniadris cave (Menorca, Spain)

    Open Access•Pablo Martín‐Ramos, Francisco P S C Gil et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2022•References: 7

Red ochre pigments have been used since ancient times by many different civilisations on different continents. In the paper presented herein, ten manufactured artefacts and biological materials stained with a red pigment found in the Bronze Age burial site of Biniadris Cave (Menorca, Spain) have been characterised throught X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction, Raman and infrared spectroscopy techniques, scanning electron microscopy and energy-di…

  • Mineral provenance of Roman lead objects from the Cinca River basin (Huesca, Spain)

Open Access•José Antonio Cuchí-Oterino, Pelayo Álvarez Penanes et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 8

A set of 50 lead artifacts, out of which 29 were glandes plumbeae, found at archaeological sites located in the Cinca River basin (Huesca, Spain) were analyzed by MC-ICP-MS to determine lead isotope ratios. A comparison with lead ore deposits exploited by the Romans in the Iberian Peninsula allowed to differentiate two main groups of samples: those manufactured with Pb from nearby Pyrenean or Iberian Range ores (30%), and those from mining areas …

  • Lead isotopes in Celtiberian denarii from Turiasu and Roman asses minted in cities of the Conventus Caesaraugustanus (Hither Spain)

    Open Access•José Antonio Cuchí, Jesús Martín‐Gil et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 3

Isotope analysis is a flexible and powerful tool for provenance studies of archaeological objects. In the present study, lead isotopic analysis was used in order to gain insight into the origin of the mineral sources of coins minted in the Celtiberian mint of Turiasu and in six coloniae and municipia of the Conventus Caesaraugustanus (Hither Spain) under Augustus and Tiberius (27 BC-37 AD). In the case of Turiasu denarii, argentum from the Iberia…
