  • Amber workshops in Central Europe during the Early Iron Age. Technology, chemical analyses, and Amber Roads

Open Access•Zuzana Mírová, Zuzana Golec Mírová et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•2026

The largest peak in the distribution of raw amber from the Baltic and the North Sea throughout European history can be identified in the middle of the 1st millennium BC. Raw amber was processed in the amber workshops the Early Iron Age (800–370 BC). This study reveals how these amber workshops can be reliably identified and what their distribution reveals about long-distance exchange systems in Europe. The amber was not only a strategic commodity…

  • Hallstatt Period Habrůvka ‒ “Býčí skála”. The Burial Constructions Reconsidered in the Light of Daub Analyses

Open Access•David Hons, Martin Golec et al.•ARTICLE•Interdisciplinaria Archaeologica…•2026

This article deals with the information value of daub from burial constructions from the 6th century BC obtained in the Entrance Hall of the Habrůvka – “Býčí skála” Cave in the years 2020–2021. The untypical discovery of daub, as a surface treatment of stone-wooden structures, allows for an innovative solution as to how the Hallstatt burial constructions/chambers were made. The set of daub samples was divided into two parts, giving two sets of da…

  • Corals and shells of the sea mollusc as an example of long-distance contacts in the Early Iron Age in Central Europe

Miloslav Chytráček, Zuzana Mírová et al.•ARTICLE•Praehistorische Zeitschrift•2025

New discoveries of worked pieces of red coral Corallium rubrum and shells of sea molluscs from Bohemia and Moravia of the Early Iron Age gave rise to the creation of an article that follows these finds in the territory of the Czech Republic, Bavaria and Austria and summarizes the current state of research on these remarkable imports from the 8 th to the beginning 4 th century BC. Red sea coral and see mollusk shells were imported, processed and u…

  • Time Travel with Radiocarbon Dating

Open Access•Kateřina Pachnerová Brabcová, Veronika Brychová et al.•ARTICLE•Interdisciplinaria Archaeologica…•2024

Radiocarbon dating is a critical tool in archaeology and Quaternary Earth science, providing absolute age estimates. Established in 2004, the Czech Radiocarbon Laboratory (CRL) has advanced from radiometric methods requiring large sample sizes to using Accelerator Mass Spectrometry, which allows for the dating of microsamples. Since 2018, CRL has undergone significant upgrades, including the acquisition of the MILEA AMS system, enhancing its capa…

  • The oldest millet herbal beer in the Europe? The ninth century BCE bronze luxury bucket from Kladina, Czech Republic

Open Access•Jan Jílek, Martin Golec et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2022•References: 37

In 2017, a luxury bronze bucket was discovered near Kladina village in the Czech Republic. The bucket is dated to the ninth century BCE, and it is a unique artefact, having no parallel in Europe. Stylistically, it is a “transition type” dated between the Late Bronze Age (11 th –10 th century BCE) and the Hallstatt Period (eighth–sixth century BCE). Detailed palynological analysis of verdigris and soil infill of the bucket identified a wide range …

    Zuzana Mírová, Pavel Fojtík•ARTICLE•Praehistorische Zeitschrift•2021

The article presents a hoard from the Final Bronze Age found in 2005 in the cadastre of Dolany-Nové Sady ‒ “Sádek”, Olomouc District (CZ). It consists of 2 bronze axes, 3 bronze cheek-pieces of a horse’s bit, 2 bronze phalerae, decorated bronze belt sheet, 6 fragments of 3 different plano-convex ingots and a ceramic vessel. The paper deals with the chronological-typological evaluation of the hoard and especially the motivations for its deposition…
