  • Boundary layer ozone in the Northern Colorado Front Range in July–August 2014 during FRAPPE and Discover-AQ from vertical profile measurements

    Open Access•S J Oltmans, L C Cheadle et al.•ARTICLE•Elementa Science of the…•2019

Data from ground-based ozone (O3) vertical profiling platforms operated during the FRAPPE/DISCOVER-AQ campaigns in summer 2014 were used to characterize key processes responsible for establishing O3 profile development in the boundary layer in the Northern Colorado Front Range. Morning mixing from the upper boundary layer and lower free troposphere into the lower boundary layer was the key process establishing the mid-morning boundary layer O3 mi…

  • O3, CH4, CO2, CO, NO2 and NMHC aircraft measurements in the Uinta Basin oil and gas region under low and high ozone conditions in winter 2012 and 2013

    Open Access•S J Oltmans, A Karion et al.•ARTICLE•Elementa Science of the…•2016

Instrumented aircraft measuring air composition in the Uinta Basin, Utah, during February 2012 and January-February 2013 documented dramatically different atmospheric ozone (O3) mole fractions. In 2012 O3 remained near levels of ∼40 ppb in a well-mixed 500–1000 m deep boundary layer while in 2013, O3 mole fractions >140 ppb were measured in a shallow (∼200 m) boundary layer. In contrast to 2012 when mole fractions of emissions from oil and gas pr…

  • Anatomy of wintertime ozone associated with oil and natural gas extraction activity in Wyoming and Utah

    Open Access•Samuel Oltmans, S J Oltmans et al.•ARTICLE•Elementa Science of the…•2014

Winter maximum daily 8-hour average (MDA8) ozone concentrations in the Upper Green River Basin, Wyoming (UGRBWY) and the Uintah Basin, Utah (UBUT) have frequently exceeded 100 ppb in January, February and March, in the past few years. Such levels are well above the U.S. air quality standard of 75 ppb. In these two remote basins in the Rockies, local ozone precursor emissions result from intense oil and gas extraction activities that release metha…

  • Identities of Competitive States in U.S. Presidential Elections

    Bonnie Johnson, B J JOHNSON•ARTICLE•Publius The Journal of Federalism•2005•Cited by: 2

When discussing the biases of the U.S. Electoral College, researchers conclude that competitive states seem to occur randomly without any explanation. This study examines the consistency with which the same states have been competitive in presidential elections from 1824 to 2000. It also identifies “spectator” states. Spectator states are those that have not been competitive for ten presidential elections in a row. A statistical analysis illustra…

  • Archaeological Applications of Amino Acid Racemization

    Open Access•Bonnie Johnson, B J JOHNSON et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•1997•Cited by: 4•References: 100

Amino acid racemization (AAR) in fossil biominerals has been used over the last 30 years to develop reliable chronologies and thermal histories in archaeological settings from all over the world. It is a biochemical reaction which progresses with time and temperature, and has the potential to be used in any material capable of sequestering amino acids (e.g., avian eggshell, molluscs, teeth, and bones). AAR is not a numerical dating method, per se…
