Assessing the Condition of the Rock Mass over the Tunnel of Eupalinus in Samos (Greece) using both Conventional Geophysical Methods and Surface to Tunnel Electrical Resistivity Tomography
The surviving Tunnel of Eupalinus comprises one of the greatest engineering achievements of ancient Greeks. The tunnel itself (1036 m long) was carved in the sixth century bc through solid rock by digging from both ends and advancing to the central meeting position. The method for achieving the meeting of the two simultaneously advancing branches is still unclear. The ancient lining shows damage, indicating instability of the rock mass, presumabl…
Assessment of the Effect of Instrumental and Discretization Errors on Derivative‐based Potential‐field Geophysical Methods
Geophysical field measurements are subject to errors, which consequently comprise part of the data and subsequently they are propagated through processing techniques. Some of these errors can be controlled and eliminated, but others such as the errors introduced by the measuring instrument cannot be avoided. Moreover, the field data are collected as discrete samples, a procedure that introduces errors by itself. These two types of error are exami…
Complex attributes of the magnetic signal for multiple sources
Complex attributes of the magnetic signal are computed using a multiple source approach. Polygonal bodies are considered and the attributes of each corner are summed to produce the overall response; that is a decomposition of the polygonal body into magnetized steps to simulate the vertices. The method is tested on synthetic examples of buried ditches, as well as on real magnetic data. This type of target was selected because it comprises a commo…
A large-scale magnetic survey in Makrygialos (Pieria), Greece
A large-scale magnetic survey was conducted in the archaeological area of Makrygialos. The site was threatened due to the construction activities carried out in the area, as part of the national highway re-route project. Geophysical prospection contributed to the archaeological evaluation of the site, which was based mainly on the salvage excavations that took place prior to and after the geophysical survey. Magnetic prospecting was applied on a …

Feasibility study on the use of seismic methods in detecting monumental tombs buried in tumuli
A tumulus is a monumental construction erected to cover a tomb. In this paper, we examine the feasibility of the seismic method in detecting buried tombs without destroying the tumulus. In the proposed seismic method, a number of refraction profiles are employed. First, we conduct a seismic refraction survey in order to map the subsurface in the vicinity of the tumulus. Then, we choose the optimum parameters of the seismic refraction survey which…
