  • A Multi‐Analytical Approach for the Compositional Characterization and Chronological Discrimination of Benin (Nigeria) Metal Sculptures

    Open Access•I Torraba, Diego A Ahumada-Forigua et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2026•Referências: 29

This study presents a multi‐analytical archaeometric approach for the compositional characterization and chronological discrimination of Benin metal sculptures in relation to the 1897 Punitive Expedition. The methodology integrates elemental composition (XRF and ICP), stable lead isotope ratios (MC‐ICP‐MS) for alloy system characterization, and residual 210 Pb activity measurements (LSC) in a sequential three‐stage protocol. Applied to 11 sculptu…

  • Comparing Continental Carbonates with Other Materials in Dating a Paleolake

    Open Access•J F García, J S Mestres et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1992•Citada por: 1•Referências: 12

We have studied the application of carbonates and organic matter to the radiocarbon dating of a paleolake. The results show a systematic apparent age shift of these materials with respect to contemporary wood. The apparent age of carbonates is evidently due to the hard-water effect, whereas the apparent age of organic matter, systematically younger than carbonates, is attributed to aquatic plants, which metabolize dissolved CO 2 . Terrestrial pla…

  • Radiocarbon Dating

    Open Access•Gemma Rauret, J S Mestres et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1992

In recent years, audiovisual techniques have evolved to the extent that videotape is now a very useful didactic tool in any scientific field. Audiovisual presentation of radiocarbon techniques allows us to communicate with radiocarbon users at a highly scientific level. To familiarize archaeologists and other users of radiocarbon dates with the basics and experimental procedures of radiocarbon dating, we prepared a videotape that explains radioca…

  • University of Barcelona Radiocarbon Dates I

    Open Access•J S Mestres, Gemma Rauret et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1991•Referências: 1

The Radiocarbon Laboratory at the University of Barcelona began its serial measurements in 1985. The following list contains dates obtained between 1985 and 1987. Both archaeological and geological samples were dated. The measurement technique we use is liquid scintillation counting of benzene. A previous paper (Mestres, García & Rauret 1991) describes sample pretreatment, synthesis and counting protocols and equipment

  • The Radiocarbon Laboratory at the University of Barcelona

    Open Access•J S Mestres, J F García et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1991•Citada por: 4•Referências: 6

In 1983, the University of Barcelona, the Institut d'Estudis Catalans and the Department of Culture of the Generalitat de Catalunya agreed to establish a laboratory for radiocarbon measurement at the Analytical Chemistry Department of the University of Barcelona. The liquid scintillation technique was chosen for radiocarbon counting. The counting laboratory is in the basement of a six-story building

  • Optimization of Liquid Scintillation Counting Conditions With Two Kinds of Vials and Detector Shields for Low-Activity Radiocarbon Measurements

    Gemma Rauret, J S Mestres et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1989•Citada por: 1

Low-level radiocarbon measurements were made using two liquid scintillation (LS) counters, both with passive lead shields of approximately the same dimensions. The first one had a conventional background reduction with low-activity lead and “high-low” coincidence bias selection, and the second one had a spectrum analysis background reduction based on the different three-dimensional pulse-height signal of background and beta pulses. The performanc…
