  • Steeper Delay Discounting for Potentially Real versus Hypothetical Cigarettes (but not Money) in Czech Republic Smokers

Open Access•Steven R Lawyer, Tereza Příhodová et al.•ARTICLE•The Psychological Record•2022

  • Reactions to Laboratory-Based Trauma Research in a Sample of Incarcerated Women

Open Access•Steven R Lawyer, Kathy Smith et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Empirical Research on…•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 4

An evidence-based approach to research ethics is critical to ethical research but little is known about how trauma survivors-especially those from vulnerable populations-respond to laboratory-based trauma research. One hundred four incarcerated women ( N = 64 rape survivors) reported their traumatic life experiences, listened to and responded to an audio recording of a dating interaction that culminates in a completed rape, and then reported thei…

  • Immediate and Delayed Reactions to Trauma-related Laboratory Research Among Rape Survivors and Controls

    Open Access•Steven R Lawyer, Brittney M Holcomb et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Empirical Research on…•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 1

Ethical implications of laboratory-based experimental trauma research are not well studied. Female rape survivors ( N = 62) and controls ( N = 79) listened to an audio recording of a sexual assault and completed mental health measures and the Reactions to Research Participation Questionnaire-Revised in the first session and again several weeks later. In the first session, mental health symptoms were associated with stronger emotional reactions an…

  • Delay Discounting and Probability Discounting, But Not Response Inhibition, Are Associated With Sexual Risk Taking in Adults

    Steven R Lawyer, Colin T Mahoney•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sex Research•2017•Cited by: 2•References: 3

Sexual risk behavior (SRB) is associated with impulsivity, but it is not clear whether different aspects of impulsivity are uniquely related to SRBs in adults. Unmarried adults ages 18 to 30 (N = 296; 41.0% male) recruited from the community reported their frequency of SRBs over the past six months using the Sexual Risk Survey (SRS; Turchik & Garske, 2009) and completed three behavioral measures of impulsivity: insensitivity to delayed consequenc…

  • Differential associations between obesity and behavioral measures of impulsivity

    Open Access•Steven R Lawyer, Steven R Boomhower et al.•ARTICLE•Appetite•2015•Cited by: 9•References: 65

  • Specificity of reinforcement for risk behaviors of the Balloon Analog Risk Task using math models of performance

    N Prause, Steven R Lawyer et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Risk Research•2013•References: 5

Risky decision-making has been studied using multitrial behavioral tasks. Concordance of such tasks to risky behaviors could be improved by: (1) mathematically modeling the components of decision change and (2) providing reinforcement specific to the risk behavior studied. Men completed two Balloon Analog Risk Tasks (BART). One provided financial reinforcement (money) and the other provided sexual reinforcement (seconds of erotic film viewing). P…
