The Impact of Assessment Modality and Demographic Characteristics on Endorsement of Military Sexual Trauma
Men with Sexual Problems and Their Partners
Epidemiologic studies of sexual function problems in men have focused on the individual male and related sociodemographic characteristics, individual risk factors and lifestyle concomitants, or medical comorbidities. Insufficient attention has been given to the role of sexual and relationship satisfaction and, more particularly, to the perspective of the couple as causes or correlates of sexual problems in men or women. Previously, we reported re…
The effect of enemy combat tactics on PTSD prevalence rates
The nature of combat (specifically, asymmetric enemy tactics) may be a risk factor for the development of PTSD among males. Factors other than enemy tactics may be more important to the development of PTSD among females. (PsycINFO Database Record

Depression in Premenopausal Women With HSDD
OBJECTIVE: Hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) is a multifactorial disorder that is affected by, and may affect, mental health. Data are from the HSDD Registry for Women, a large multicenter observational study of US women with clinically diagnosed generalized, acquired HSDD. We analyzed complete baseline data from 1088 premenopausal women. METHODS: Validated measures of sexual function and distress, physical and mental health, and depressio…

Effects of Interview Mode on Assessments of Erectile and Ejaculatory Dysfunction among Men with Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)
In a randomized experiment (N = 249; age 50 + years), this study examined if self-reports of erectile dysfunction (ED) and ejaculatory dysfunction (EjD) symptomatology were influenced by the mode of interview administration (computer-assisted self-interview [CASI], audio computer-assisted self-interview [ACASI], or computer-assisted personal interview [CAPI; involving an interviewer]). This study also examined if mode moderated person variables h…

Prevalence and Correlates of Sexual Activity and Function in Women
Sexual Well-Being, Happiness, and Satisfaction, in Women
Based on results of large-scale survey studies, there is evidence of an association between sexual activity and satisfaction, on the one hand, and aspects of emotional well-being, partner satisfaction, and overall quality of life on the other. Although the nature of the casual relationship is unclear, women with more active and satisfying sexual relationships report consistently higher ratings of emotional and relationship satisfaction. This heig…
The Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI)
The Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) is a brief, multidimensional scale for assessing sexual function in women. The scale has received initial psychometric evaluation, including studies of reliability, convergent validity, and discriminant validity (Meston, 2003 Meston, C. M. 2003. Validation of the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) in women with female orgasmic disorder and in women with hypoactive sexual desire disorder. Journal of Sex & M…

The Female Sexual Distress Scale (FSDS)
Recent consensus-based characterizations of female sexual dysfunction have emphasized personal distress as an essential component of their definition. To assist researchers and clinicians, we developed a new scale, the Female Sexual Distress Scale, to measure sexually related personal distress in women. In this article, we describe the initial stages in the development and validation of this instrument. Three studies involving a total of approxim…
PDE-5 Inhibition and Sexual Response
Phosphodiesterase type-5 (PDE-5) inhibitors are a new class of vasoactive drugs that have been developed for treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED). The mechanism of action involves active inhibition of the PDE-5 enzyme and resulting increase in cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) and smooth muscle relaxation in the penis. Sildenafil citrate (Viagra) is a potent and selective PDE-5 inhibitor, which is the first drug in this class to be approved…

Report of the International Consensus Development Conference on Female Sexual Dysfunction
PURPOSE: Female sexual dysfunction is highly prevalent but not well defined or understood. We evaluated and revised existing definitions and classifications of female sexual dysfunction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An interdisciplinary consensus conference panel consisting of 19 experts in female sexual dysfunction selected from 5 countries was convened by the Sexual Function Health Council of the American Foundation for Urologic Disease. A modified D…
Sexual Dysfunction in the United States
CONTEXT: While recent pharmacological advances have generated increased public interest and demand for clinical services regarding erectile dysfunction, epidemiologic data on sexual dysfunction are relatively scant for both women and men. OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence and risk of experiencing sexual dysfunction across various social groups and examine the determinants and health consequences of these disorders. DESIGN: Analysis of data from…
Relationship of Physical Symptoms and Mood to Perceived and Actual Blood Pressure in Hypertensive Men
OBJECTIVE: Noncompliance with antihypertensive treatment is a significant health concern. Researchers have suggested that the absence of definable symptoms associated with elevated blood pressure (BP) attenuates patients' motivation to use medication. The current study evaluated the relation of psychological variables, including symptoms, perceptions of BP, and perceptions of medication efficacy, to physiological variables, including actual BP an…

Determinants of Perceived Health in Patients with Left Ventricular Dysfunction
OBJECTIVE: Few studies have evaluated the determinants of perceived health in patients with chronic illness. The present study was designed to evaluate the role of biomedical, demographic, and psychosocial influences on global subjective health by means of a structural equation modeling approach. METHOD: A conceptual model of perceived health was tested in a subsample of patients (N = 146) from the multicenter Studies of Left Ventricular Dysfunct…

Current approaches to the evaluation of sexual desire disorders
In recent years disorders of sexual desire have come to occupy center stage in the field of sex therapy. In this article, we first review the current conceptual models of desire and consider key difficulties in the formulation and treatment of desire problems. The role of biological and other determinants of desire are briefly reviewed, and the clinical approaches of other researchers are compared and contrasted. Overall, we have observed a trend…
Lobeline and Reduction of Cigarette Smoking
An empirical and logical analysis of research employing lobeline sulfate in reducing cigarette smoking raises serious doubts as to the utility of this chemical “nicotine substitute.” An experiment is also described in which predominantly college-aged volunteers desiring to stop smoking were given either specially prepared troches containing 0.5 mg. lobeline or placebos in a double-blind design. Neither during treatment nor during an immediately f…
Suppression of Penile Tumescence by Instrumental Conditioning
Penile tumescence was elicited in normal male volunteers by erotic tape-recorded passages. Experimental subjects were provided with immediate contingent feedback [red light] whenever their penile tumescence exceeded a criterion increase. Controls for noncontingent feedback and suppression instructions alone indicate that the instrumental conditioning procedure is particularly effective in modifying this response. Results have implications for eti…
Voluntary Control of Penile Tumescence
This study investigated the voluntary control of penile tumescence in the absence of external erotic stimulation. Twelve experimental subjects were given analogue visual feedback and monetary rewards for increase in penile diameter as measured by a strain gauge. Twelve control subjects were given no analogue feedback and noncontingent rewards but the same instructions to maximize erections. While both groups were capable of voluntary penile tumes…
