Negotiating HIV Protection in the Era of Online Dating and Pre-Exposure-Prophylaxis (PrEP)
HIV protection depends on the consent and cooperation of sexual partners, which requires negotiation. Early HIV-related research identified condom negotiation strategies. However, strategies used specifically among men having sex with men (MSM) remained underexamined. This project explored how HIV-negative MSM negotiate their protection from HIV when having sex with non-steady partners, considering current risk reduction practices, the availabili…
Exploring social work students’ attitudes toward research courses
Several studies have confirmed social work students’ reluctance about research courses. However, there remains little understanding of the determinants of students’ interest in research courses. This study aimed to contribute to a more robust understanding of underlying dynamics influencing students’ feelings regarding research courses through a comparison of students entering a BSW programme in Australia and Switzerland. We hypothesized that a) …
Heterosexist Attitudes amongst Students Entering a Bachelor of Social Work Programme in Switzerland
Social work programmes are expected to enable students to work adequately with sexual minorities. In Switzerland, however, curricular content on sexual minorities is lacking in BSW programmes. Potential sexual prejudice is not explicitly addressed. This study aimed to assess the attitudes towards lesbian women and gay men amongst students entering the BSW programme of a university in Switzerland to establish a basis for discussing curriculum deve…
Collaborative research and development
Emerging discussions about research-practice collaboration in social work have sought to explore why collaboration and engagement are important. However, knowledge about how these collaborations unfold remains limited. The present study explored 17 collaborative research and development projects involving social work researchers and practitioners in the German speaking area (Germany, Austria and Switzerland). It aimed to capture the complexity of…
Prevalence and predictors of homophobic behavior among high school students in Switzerland
This study assessed homophobic verbal behavior among high school students in Switzerland and tested a multifactorial explanatory model. Data were collected by a self-administered questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics and structural equation modeling. Of the 897 students, 85.4% reported having made homophobic statements in the previous 12 months. Behavior was predicted by negative attitudes (β = 0.20), acceptance of traditional g…
Stigmatisierungserfahrungen von Menschen mit Diabetes mellitus in der Schweiz
Despite the prevailing perception that diabetes mellitus is not a stigmatized condition, there is growing evidence of stigma. However, there have been no in-depth studies of stigma towards people living with diabetes (PWD). In order to complement the respective knowledge base of social workers and other health-allied professions, the present study aimed to establish whether PWD in Switzerland experience stigma, and if so, in what context and to w…
Acceptability and willingness to use HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis among HIV-negative men who have sex with men in Switzerland
Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is discussed as an additional HIV prevention method targeting men who have sex with men (MSM). So far, PrEP has not been approved in Switzerland and only little is known about the acceptability of PrEP among MSM living in Switzerland. Given the slow uptake of PrEP among MSM in the USA, the objectives of the study were to investigate the acceptability for PrEP and to identify factors influencing the acceptability fo…
Diabetes-related stigma affects the quality of life of people living with diabetes mellitus in Switzerland
There is a growing body of scientific evidence that stigma represents a reality for many people living with diabetes (PWD). However, little is known about the impact of experienced stigma. Against this background, the present study aimed to establish, by means of an in-depth consideration of the situation in Switzerland, whether and how experienced and perceived stigma impact the quality of life of those PWD affected. In this cross-sectional stud…
Predictors of HIV-protection behaviour in HIV-positive men who have sex with casual male partners
This prospective study applies an extended Information-Motivation-Behavioural Skills (IMB) model to establish predictors of HIV-protection behaviour among HIV-positive men who have sex with men (MSM) during sex with casual partners. Data have been collected from anonymous, self-administered questionnaires and analysed by using descriptive and backward elimination regression analyses. In a sample of 165 HIV-positive MSM, 82 participants between th…
From research to practice
There is a widespread consensus in social work that social work practice should be based on research. However, conceptualising how research and practice are interrelated is still evolving and a subject for debate. With little exception, existing concepts and models almost invariably fail to include explicit development processes. In contrast, Research-based Intervention Development conceptualises the interrelation between research and practice in…

New Proposals for Generating and Exploiting Solution-Oriented Knowledge
The claim that professional social work should be based on scientific knowledge is many decades old with knowledge transfer usually moving in the direction from science to practice. The authors critique this model of knowledge transfer and support a hybrid one that places more of an emphasis on professional knowledge and action occurring in the real world. The authors particularly focus on the organizational contexts in which social work practice…
