  • Factors Associated With Exits From and Returns to Homelessness Among Older Homeless Adults: Results From the Hope Home Study

    Open Access•Cheyenne M Garcia, Jennifer L Evans et al.•ARTICLE•Housing Policy Debate•2025

Homelessness is dynamic; some individuals cycle between homelessness and housing. In a longitudinal study of 411 adults aged 50 and older who were homeless at study enrollment, we examined the prevalence of and factors associated with exits from and returns to homelessness. With a median 4 years of follow-up, 80% of participants exited homelessness into housing. Having a permanent rental subsidy was associated with retaining housing. Rental subsi…

  • US college women’s understandings of definitions of intimate partner violence

Open Access•Rebecca Rich, Jennifer Evans et al.•ARTICLE•Health Education Journal•2022

Objective: Past research suggests students have differing definitions of sexual assault, violence and intimate partner violence (IPV). To adequately develop violence prevention efforts, it is important to examine how college students understand these terms and associated behaviours. The purpose of this study was to identify which behaviours are categorised as IPV by college women and whether there are any ‘grey areas’ when it comes to IPV. Design…

  • Housing Stability and Hepatitis C Infection for Young Adults Who Inject Drugs: Examining the Relationship of Consistent and Intermittent Housing Status on HCV Infection Risk

    Open Access•M D Morris, Irene H Yen et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Urban Health•2020•References: 2

Housing status affects drug using behaviors, but less is known about the relationship between housing patterns and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. HCV-negative young people who inject drugs (PWID) were enrolled into a prospective cohort (2003-2019) with quarterly study visits. We used Cox regression to estimate the independent association of recent housing status (housed vs. unhoused, housing stability, and housing trajectory) on HCV incidence…

  • HCV screening in a cohort of HIV infected and uninfected homeless and marginally housed women in San Francisco, California

Open Access•Kimberly Page, Michelle Yu et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2017

Results fill an important gap in information regarding HCV among homeless women, and confirm the need for enhanced screening in this population where a high proportion are baby-boomers and have a history of drug use and psychiatric problems. Due to their age and risk profile, there is a high probability that women in this study have been infected for decades, and thus have significant liver disease. The association with mental illness and HCV sug…

Objectives. To determine the association between multiple drug use and nonfatal overdose among young people (younger than 30 years) who inject drugs. Methods. We completed a longitudinal study of 173 injection drug users younger than 30 years living in San Francisco, California, between April 2012 and February 2014. Results. The odds of nonfatal overdose increased significantly as heroin and benzodiazepine pill-taking days increased and when alco…

Methods. We interviewed 1426 community-based homeless and marginally housed adults. We used multivariate models to analyze factors associated with a history of imprisonment. Results. Almost one fourth of participants (23.1%) had a …

Paula J Lum, Kristen C Ochoa et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2004•References: 9

Diamond correctly points out the difficulty of making comparisons between the presence of hepatitis B surface antibodies (anti-HBs) among persons reporting prior immunizations (Seattle Young Men’s Survey [YMS]) and anti-HBs seroconversion measured after a documented immunization series (the UFO Study). Recall bias and waning anti-HBs could certainly have contributed to the lower proportion (70%) of subjects with isolated anti-HBs that YMS investi…
