  • Infanticide of Defective Newborns: An Old Midwife's Story

    Open Access•Slavoj Hontela, John R Reddon•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1996

The story of how a midwife many years ago dealt with defective newborns is used to illustrate complete control by a system external to the family. Similarities exist with current public policy concerning the interrelated issues of abortion, neonatal euthanasia, and infanticide in which the family system is often ignored. It is argued that the family's values, expectations, and desires are relevant to the establishment of public policy in this sen…

  • A perspective on developments in assessing psychopathology: A critical review of the MMPI and MMPI-2

    Edward Helmes, John R Reddon•ARTICLE•Psychological Bulletin•1993

Many concerns have been raised about the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), but the emphasis on continuity during its revision precluded addressing many of these problems in the new MMPI-2. In this review, problems with the MMPI and MMPI-2 are explicated in an effort to promote more informed use of this and other tests of psychopathology. Major theoretical concerns include the lack of a consistent measurement model, heterogeneous…

  • The Multidimensional Anger Inventory: Reliability and Factor Structure in an Inmate Sample

    Open Access•Daryl G Kroner, John R Reddon et al.•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•1992

The present study examined the item factor structure and reliability of the Multidimensional Anger Inventory (MAI) with 372 male inmates referred for assessment. Examination of the first rotated principal component and item-remainder correlations suggested that five items were not measuring the same content as the other 32 items. After deletion of these five items, a two-factor solution was rotated to a varimax criterion. These two factors reflec…

    Open Access•Ronald R Holden, John R Reddon•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1987

This study examined personality differences in participants from a university subject pool as a function of the time of participation during the academic term and year. For 150 introductory psychology students with required participation in a subject pool, significant associations were found between time of participation and specific personality variables as measured by Jackson's Personality Research Form. Significant temporal associations with m…

Open Access•John R Reddon, David Patton et al.•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•1985

A confirmatory item factor analysis of the Waring Intimacy Questionnaire (WIQ) was performed on samples of 198 married college students, 148 married psychiatric patients, and 218 married members of a random sample of residents in an urban community. For the nine hypothesized factors, 95%, 98%, and 97% of the items loaded appropriately in each of the three samples. Across samples 84% of the items loaded appropriately. Furthermore the pattern of lo…

Three samples consisting of normal adults (n=182), psychiatric patients (n=352) and high school students (n=1,485) were used to evaluate the empirical item structure of the Basic Personality Inventory. Using a principal components model with a confirmatory rotation, 96, 99, and 98 percent of the items loaded appropriately on their respective scales. No items were found to load inappropriately across all three samples, 219 of 220 items loaded appr…

Francophone (n = 90) and Anglophone (n = 106) managers for a national consumer lending company in Canada responded to measures of human needs (Personality Research Form) and Job Satisfaction (Job Descriptive Index). Needs are transformed to remove multicollinearity and a multivariate model developed to account for variation in job satisfaction. A considerable amount of the variance in job satisfaction is accounted for by human needs that are high…
